slideshow NeighborhoodScout.com has rated the Rosemount neighborhood of the City of Portsmouth one of the best places in America to retire for $150,000 or less.
Portsmouth placed 11th on a list of 20 cities — between No. 1: Corpus Christi, Texas, and No. 20: Cape Charles, Va. The site scored the neighborhood a 96 crime rate (with 100 being the safest), and a total retirement score of 84 (out of 100).
“Retirement is changing for the better, as active seniors and 50-plus baby boomers look to get more out of this next stage in their lives,” Dr. Andrew Schiller, founder of NeighborhoodScout, said. “Finding a great place to retire that combines the excitement of a dream retirement locale with an affordable price, is the ideal solution today for many retirees and prospective retirees.”
He said the site examined six factors when compiling its list.
• Safety from crime,
• Peace and quiet,
• An educated and vibrant blend of seniors and other age groups,
• Striking scenery,
• Diverse options for housing; and,
• Unbeatable home values.
Ohio was also well represented on the Web site’s list of top 25 most dangerous neighborhoods. Orange Blossom Trl., in Cleveland was rated No. 21, and Liberty Street in Cincinnati placed No. 1.
According to its own description, published on its Web site, NeighborhooodScout is a Rhode Island-based company, borne of university research, specializing in nationwide relocation software, retail site selection, and real estate investment advising.
Portsmouth Mayor James Kalb was unavailable to comment on the rating Monday afternoon.
