London's Muslim mayor this week dismissed the bomb blasts in New York and New Jersey as part of living in the world today.
"It's part and parcel of living in a great global city," Sadiq Khan told the Evening Standard. "You've gotta be prepared for these things. You've gotta be vigilant."
Khan made the remarks Sunday morning during a visit to New York City. He became the first Muslim mayor of a major Western city when he took office in May.
A naturalized American citizen from Afghanistan is suspected of carrying out the bombings over the weekend. Ahmad Khan Rahami was captured Monday after a gun battle with police in Linden, N.J.
Rahami was charged with several terrorism crimes and attempting to murder police officers Tuesday.
Khan said citizens have to support the members of the law enforcement community in this age of terrorism.
"You've gotta support the police, doing an incredibly hard job," he said. "You've gotta support the security services.
"It is a reality I'm afraid that London, New York, other major cities around the world have got to be prepared for these sorts of things."
