DICK BURDETE WROTE A BOOK ON THEM. DICK AND I WERE IN THE SAME FRESHMAN CLASS AT P.H.S. IN THE "49-50" SCHOOL YEAR. WAYNE WISEMAN GOT INTO THE OHIO HALL OF FAME FOR WINNING OVER 500 BASKETBALL GAMES IN OHIO HIGH SCHOOL BEFORE ARCH JUSTICE GOT IN. THOUGHT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN ALL OF THIS.

Politics

If anybody reading this has any suspicion that I am an anti-obama conservative republican- durn tootin! No, I am not one of the richer upper-class republicans as their reputation sets with the blacks and union members. I am just an individual who has read enough to know that obama is trouble with a capital T for our great country.

I can't stand the thought of this charasmatic figure, who has so many anti-American quotations and friends in his closet, becoming our Commander in Chief. He is smooth at denieing all that he really is. That puts all of our service people as his underlings and he couldn't carry the shorts of any of them.

The terrorists have declared war on us and our fighting men are doing it while we are at the mall.

Please don't vote for obama. Vote for America first!

Election and altruists vs. the atrocious

During the past twentieth century, those old enough to, witnessed the altruistic people and the atrocious people- Time December 3, 2007- What Makes Us Moral. Examples of altruists were Mohandas Ghandi, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, JR., and the Dalai Lama while the atrocious examples were Joseph Stalin, Augusto Pinochet, Adolph Hitler, Osama Bin Laden and Pol Pot.

Additional atrocious ones in this twenty-first century are Saddam Hussein and his two sons, Venezuela's Chavez, Cuba's Castro, Iran's Ahmajinadad (sp?), Cult leaders Charles Manson, and Jones of the Guyana suicide pact, etc.

This election could put the executive power of our government into the hands of a dangerous person. Venezuela was a democracy which Chavez is running now as a dictator. Castro came to power in Cuba and gave the people much change and poorer individul lives. Be very careful how you vote Nov. 4, 2008.

Dr. Christ George- Valedictorian Speech

Valedictorian Speech

Dr. George was meeting with the honor students who would soon graduate from B.I.S’ High School program. One student raised his hand to talk. In an extremely anti-tone, he declared that the speech by the valedictorian should not be allowed at the coming commencement. He made that a motion. Dr. George asked who would second the motion. After a second-less delay, one of the students meekly raised his hand as a second. .

Dr. George explained that the speech was an honor for that one student who excelled above all others. He didn’t want to disallow it, but he would go by the wishes of the seventeen honor students. He tore sheets of paper to be used as ballots and passed them around. He asked one of the students to go to the blackboard and when the ballots were in, Dr. George would slide a ballot across the table, open it and ask the student to tally. The vote came up to an eight to eight tie, with one ballot remaining. Dr. George kept that ballot to himself and dismissed the meeting without telling of the final tally.

The final grades came in and, as fate allows, the valedictorian was the student who raised the anti-speech motion. Dr. George called for him to come to his office. He initially explained to the student that he had become the new valedictorian-that the honor was his. Amid the student’s jubilation, he informed him that the valedictorian would not be giving the commencement speech. “What?” exclaimed the hurt young man? “I get a chance to be honored for the first time in my life and you take it away from me.” He grimaced and even cried there in front of Dr. George. Then Dr. George slid the final ballot to the anguished and disappointed student. The motion was actually turned down so that the speech would be given by the valedictorian. He would be allowed the honor he almost motioned away.

Dr. George had a lot of experience in criminology and ran the educational program for a while at the former Lancaster’s Boys Industrial School (B.I.S.) Dr. George has taught criminology classes at Capital University and The Ohio State University.


Harold sat across from me in my office. Governor James Rhodes gave me a mission to revive the educational program for the 2000 inmates of the high school age boys’ prison and he gave me a tight schedule to get it done. One of my early students was Harold Right.

I had checked Harold’s records. He had only three high school credits. I discovered that he had an IQ of 150 (by Binet’s chart, 130 is far superior and is exhibited only by 2.2 % of the population). Dr. George advised the juvenile offender that he could get a high school diploma by taking academic classes while he served his time at B.I.S. Harold belligerently replied that he would never have the credits to get his high school diploma and, more or less, asked Dr. George to just leave him alone. He left in an apparently angrier mood than when he entered the office.

The next morning when Dr. George settled into his office, there was a knock on his door at 8:30. Harold entered with a different appearance, but sort of dared Chris to back off saying that he could get a diploma while imprisoned. “No way could I do that! But I didn’t sleep last night because I was thinking about what you said.”

Christ explained that he could get most of the credits although he didn’t have enough prison time to finish. “How could I finish?” Well Dr. George said, it is a very rare occurrence, but you could write a letter to the Director of Youth Services for the State, Bill Willis, and request an extension of your time so that you could finish. You do know that you will have to attend classes and satisfactorily complete the requirements. Harold left wondering what he might do.

The next morning at 8:30 Harold knocked on Dr. George’s door once again. He came in and handed a letter addressed to Bill Willis to Dr. George. In it he requested a three week extension of his imprisonment so that he could complete credits for his high school diploma. Christ told him that he would see what he could do.

Christ walked the letter into Bill Willis’ office. The ex-Cleveland Brown and Ohio State football star wondered at the request. Christ assured Bill of the young man’s background and apparent abilities. Mr. Willis granted the request.

Harold began his courses and pursued them earnestly. He also played on the school’s basketball team. He finished as valedictorian of his high school class at B.I.S. Dr. George always saw to it that the valedictorian had the honor of making the graduation speech at the school. Harold’s speech was impeccable and a great inspiration to the students. Dr. George was the proudest member of the audience.

Harold’s academic prowess won him a scholarship at Ohio University in Athens south of Lancaster. The scholarship provision was that he would receive two additional years’ scholarship if he satisfactorily met the requirements of the school. Harold finished with honors and later obtained a Master’s Degree as well at OU.

Following graduation he was hired by IBM for their management program. Dr. George lost track of Harold for a few years, but received a message from his secretary that he had received a call from a Harold Right. Dr. George called the number Harold left. He asked to speak with Harold Right. The respondent told him that she would get the Director for him. “I don’t need to speak with the Director Dr. George said, I want to speak with Harold Right.” Mr. Right is the Director he was informed. When they spoke, Harold told Dr. George of the great impact on his life by the good Dr.’s counseling. After IBM, he had been called by Nationwide Insurance and offered the position he now held with them. He asked Dr. George to come and visit him in the Nationwide high rise building in downtown Columbus. Harold took him to the executive cafeteria atop the building where they visited more. Harold also started a computer business on the side and developed it successfully.

A few years after, Dr. George was invited to Harold’s wedding which was a gala affair. Harold told Dr. George that he had gone back to his ghetto neighborhood in Dayton and found that his buddies were living the same kinds of existence he had before going to B.I.S. His buddies asked what happened to him. “You don’t even talk like us anymore”, they told him.

“Dr. George, I would be doing those same things- stealing car electronics, burglarizing, doing drugs, etc. You gave me a way out. I’m so glad that I listened to you.”

Harold Right is called upon for many commencement addresses now. Dr. George has been told many times of the wonderful speeches the gentleman consistently presents to the audiences.

Christ George credits the many excellent teachers who have influenced his life and is so proud that Harold Right is “paying forward” as Ohio State’s former great football teacher/coach, Woody Hayes, always admonished his players to do.

The name Harold Right is the only fictitious part of Dr. Christ George’s story.

Dick Klitch is 75

Jeanie and I were very privileged to spend the evening at Lindays' in German Village last night.

Jody, a Vice President of Dockers' in SF and a daughter, was the instigator among the other Klitch offspring in establishing the party. Dick's actual 75th birthday was Friday the 15th.

With the grandchildren, there were thirty or so of us gathered in the upstairs patio for a perfect summer evening.

These are a few of my observations:

All of Dick's and Joan's children and grandchildren are very exceptional people individually.

Beth has encountered a disabling disease which leaves her in a lot of pain as still a young lady. She, more or less, dismissed herself from the hospital yesterday afternoon, with insistence to make her dad's birthday party. Beth's career had brought her to the pinnacle of success as a much sought after speaker concerning the qualities of nursing home operations, and she had a thriving business employing 22 people as well as many consultants from offices on the edge of Grandview. She maintains her intelligence and perspicuity with a great deal of courage, ala Herman Klitch, Dick's dad and our Mound Park guru of sports.

Tim and his wife live in Lyndon Johnson's former house in Austin Texas and have three outstanding and athletic teen age sons. Tim is an OEM of a firm in Austin and is class personified. If you have met him, you like and respect Tim as he so does his dad. The young fellow has recently lost thirty pounds and declares himself to be "shaping up". The handsome executive looks good and has a good looking and exceptional Austin raised wife.

Jenny has taken a job in Washington D.C., and although her lawyer-husband still lives in southern FL, they commute to each other on weekends. She was hired not long ago by a firm in Washington which manages business affairs of 57 sports and celebrity figures, including a recently celebrated Olympic swimmer named Michael Phelps- the Olympics' all-time gold medal winner.

Beth's youngest grandchild, to Caroline, is less than a year old. Jody, obviously bright and vibrant as a lady executive, shows humility of greatness in psyche. While we all dined, mostly on never better filet mignon for most of us, Jody stood holding and rocking the baby in her arms in an inconspicuous manner. After the meal, Andy Adams was the first to go, take the baby in his arms, and relieving the wonderful Jody to allow her to eat the great meal.

Each of the kids, sans the courageously attentive Beth, spoke words about their 75 year old dad. Jody's included observed features of the "white-haired man" to the two beautiful granddaughters and to Jody. Jenny the ex-tennis pro and now successful lawyer, gave teasing remarks about the father she respects and loves. Tim told a couple of Dick Klitch ditties.

Andy Adams, the very successful Columbus lawyer from Portsmouth and Dick's good friend and tennis protégé, told of how Dick has started many of his friends and other students along the right paths. I was happy to give Dick an e-mail message from my oldest son, Jay, concerning Dick's help in getting Jay the invitation to play Division 1 basketball at Miami of Ohio. I asked only yesterday morning that he write something , because I knew Jay can write much better than I and that he too respects the Klitches very much. I learned things in Jay's e-mail message which I hadn't fully realized about Jeanie's, and my, son.

Jeanie sat next to Beth and I was extremely proud of her loving attention to the weakened and suffering young friend. Jeanie enjoys thinking of friends with cards on many different occasions. She thinks often of Beth and knows that Joan makes several trips to help her daughter at her home in Mount Vernon, OH. Jeanie sends cards to Beth quite often. Beth expressed her appreciation of Jeanie's closeness to her.

Another teaching pro lady from Massachusetts spoke of her great respect for Dick's tennis teaching which had been of tremendous help to her. Joe Arganbright Joan's cousin and a member along with his twin brother of Dick Hopkins' Ohio State Championship American Legion team from Grandview in 1959, was there kibitzing in his best form. Joe was also a great friend of recently departed urchin Shorty Valance. Joe was successful in insurance and Beth expressed her gratitude that he had convinced her to get a disability plan at an early age preceding her setback. Joe declared that few young people thought to purchase the disability plan. Don't we all think that we are invincible?

That is pretty much my report,Bob and Ron, my two fellow urchins. Dick and I each wished that you, and many others since deceased, were there to celebrate.

Seventy-five years and still walking. And, even at that, he is still nearly three months younger than me. I will be 76 November 13 and Ronnie will be 75 the same day. What about you, young John Bob looney?

With little audacity, I copy my Portsmouth address list with this message. Dick is an ex-urchin of P'Town celebrity status.

Wildcat and Middletown Middie- Shelby Linville- dies

These e-mails are by Jack Plymale, a 1944 Portsmouth Trojan football lineman under Coach Paul Walker, and myself, regarding shelby Linville's passing at 78.

*Sam, poosibly, even a greater thrill than watching great athletes is to
revel in the memory of that greatness and to marvel at the talent of their
tutors who could call on them for excellence and get it almost every time
and do it repetitively over long periods. The old Col at UK was a classic
example. I can stil remember a radio interview in which they had he and
several of his players in the late middle forties. He was talking about, and
to ,Wah-Wah Jones. The slow and rolling way he said WAWWAW and the affection
that was implied kinda rings through the years. I think Wah-Wah was an end
and made all american for Bear Bryant too. I think he pitched baseball
also . Paul Walker had a marvelous sense of humor and got almost exactly
what he wanted all the time with very little rancor or personal degradation.
He was a very demanding task master, but made these demands in a way that
implied(without saying it) they are for you, not me. We half way kidded him
for years that he got Jerry Lucas's dad a job at Armco so he would move
from Kyto middletown. Sorry to hear about Shelby Linville. What"s the old
bromide (One of Gib Lakeman's favorites): "all the great men are dying and I don"t
feel so good myself." I feel great!*
