My wife, Jeanie, and I are in our mid-eighties.

As any human anywhere on this earth must realize, we are in the latter years of our lives.

Besides wonderful family, we have each enjoyed wonderful friendship and experiences.  Neither Jeanie nor I are perfect,  as no humans are.  Yet, we are perfectly blessed.

I wish for anybody who has ever read any of my writings, that they can enjoy relationships from their own home towns, whether it be Timbuctoo, Tokyo, or anywhere in this world.  We have enjoyed our lives for the most part; however, I wish to share a note to my friend, Dick Klitch, from our early days in Portsmouth, Ohio, USA. below.

Dick and I have met often and reminisced for over the last fifty years here in the Columbus, Ohio area for breakfasts and home town talk.

These meetings were shared with so many over the years and are continuing now on the third Wednesday of each month.  I find them invigorating (enlivening) for my life:

The Portsmouth group used to rely on me for updates on your improvement (we don't like to hear anything but).  Please advise anybody here in Ohio about your progress.

We have concerns for you, Joan, Tim and his family there with the "Killing Packages" 

in and around Austin.  Anystreet, America anymore. Who knows?

A little good news goes a long way for this Ohio crew as we remember our P'Town days.  I hope you miss that part of our enjoyment here in our golden years, good friend.  You are in our prayers.

I've had a bacterial infection that has me laid up for the last couple of weeks; however, my wonderful nurse, Jeanie, has promised to get me to the breakfast in the morning, if at all possible.  She knows how I enjoy our friends from our home town.

Portsmouth Breakfast things from the Wednesday, Aug 21 meeting yesterday

Portsmouth breakfast group in Columbus- things from Wednesday Aug 21:

Five  terrific people, excluding me of course, met at Marshall's in Grandview yesterday and shared Portsmouth Ohio stories.  Dr. Dan Ross, Dick Klitch, Blaine Bierley, Dr. Dick Hansgen, were joined by Joe Arganbright, Joan Klitch's cousin.  Joe began by presenting Dr. Ross with  a photo he had "received" from the San Diego Chicken.  Dan remembers everything or seems to me, and fondly recalled his relationship with the Chicken.  Joe stretches the truth a little as we P'Town guys would never do ;).  But he added so much in his banter with Dick and Dan.

Joe and his twin brother, John, played basketball and baseball for Dick Hopkins at Grandview High School.  Hopkins has been credited along with Bill Newmnan, by the likes of Al Oliver and Larry Hisle, as teaching more fundamental baseball to them than any major league skipper. He led the Grandviwew Legion Team to a State tournament with the Arganbright twins on the team.   Joe, of course, shares Miami and Dick Klitch memorable stories of teaching and coaching from their family gatherings.  Thanks Mr. Arganbtright and you are always invited to Portsmouth gatherings we attend.

Dan Ross refereed a lot throughout his career and those experiences have led him to refereeing State Championships and meeting many who have known of his straight-shooting which has led him to becoming Ohio's Commissioner of the Ohio High School Athletic Association.  The plethora of stories that floated in the Grandview Restaurant about the Cultural Center of Our Universe, and the wonderful people from there, were entertaining and fun!

Blaine and Dick and I listened a lot, and Blaine will probably add some to this in his inimicable way of presenting Portsmouth's history.

In listening, I failed to mention that the wonderful Sarah DuPuy Rapp had said that she would enjoy a Der Dutchman get together in Plain City some time.  That would better fit her, who now lives in Springfield after selling the Rapp Ponderosa on P'Town's west side.  I'm sure that would help Ron Walters make it.  Think about that please, and forward any ideas for a gathering time to Blaine or me.

Wisconsin Schools saving money due to Gov. Walker ... Thanks Judi Cole!

The Democrats and Liberals are keeping really quiet about this. Is there any wonder why Obama stayed away from Wisconsin on his latest Campaign Tour (Listening Tour, Cough! Cough!), even though he was right next door. Wisconsin is the last place they want to talk about, just like New Jersey! > > Important read > > This got real quiet as to how it came out. Another wonderful Woody story- Thanks Ramey Hoskins and friend

I received the following from a friend. A good follow up to the other stories about Woody.




Ramey. I didn't like his 3 yards and a cloud of dust and he was tough and had lot diff lifestyles that I didn't like BUT he was a mighty good man in many ways. I came to OSU the same year he did, Had classes under him and never missed a football game during those 4 years. Some of my favorites

Seeing 80,000 plus fans standing up and singing, "Goodbye Woody, We hate to see you go" This was at the tailend of his 1st or 2nd year there when the football team was stil pathetic and it was probably the last game before the Michigan Game. We he won that game and the rest is history !

Bo Schembeckler had played for Woody at Miami, Coached for Woody at Miami and OSU, and of course went on to coach against Woody the rest of his career. I was amazed at the "Hatred" between the two while Bo coached at Mich. I mentioned this to Jim Ruehl a friend of mine who played for Woody and later went on to help another one of Woody's assistants who took over Bowling Green about the same time Bo took over Mich. Jims answer was "Hogwash, every year before the season starts , Woody comes up, Bo comes down and the four of us go out to dinner and talk all night"

Woody had a recruit from Zanesville that was a Dr's son and a very good football player. The Dr told me Woody had been to his house 10 times and had never mentioned football. When it came down to the day that Woody offered him his scholarship, The player was sitting across the table from Woody and The dad was seated at the end of the table. Woody made the offer. His dad jumped in and said Woody, I've been planning for his Education all these years and he really doesn't need a scholarship. Why don't I pay his way and give the scholarship to some one who needs it? Woody turns to the Dr and said, "I didn't offer you the scholarship, I offered it to him and he deserves it !" The kid went to OSU one year. died of Leukemia and of course that would have been the end of the relationship with almost any coach you can name. The Dr told me that Woody never came thru town without calling the day before and telling the Dr's wife, "Make me a Blueberry Pie, I'll be in tomorrow". This was at least 4-5 years after the kid had passed away.

So you may like him or not but he had some positive things about him that few could match. By the way, he carried the facade with Bo right to the end. His last public appearance, he was brought from a Nursing Home, in a wheel chair, to a dinner in his honor. The door opens, Bo walks in and Woody bellows, "What the Hell are you doing here?"

WINTER Poem

It's winter in Ohio
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At thirty-five below.

Oh, how I love Ohio
When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave Ohio
I'm frozen to the ground!
