Pete Minego- Portsmouth Times in the forties and fifties
Who remembers reading the Pete Minego sports columns in the Portsmouth Times (Ohio) during the forties and fifties? I read them then with religious fervor. He was often quoted by the city newspapers.
Pete told us of Lowell Thomas referring to our city as the only one in the USA with tombstones for street signs. Gave us a little false bravado for the Cultural Center of our Universe.
I would like for some person still living in the city to researcch the old Minego columns and present some of his best.

When all of the various taxes are added together, is there any part of our income left? It is darn near zero and the libs are still generating more.
I am a senior and there is no COLA for my social security. That is another new senior tax. It is good to be liberal with the excess funds but our 'representatives' have already filled their own pockets with funds that are owed China by us all. And then we have appointed czars making further drains and doing no good. and should I say ACORN? I believe every 'service' going is raising the rate, particularly on us seniors whom o will probably euthanize in the future. It is little comfort to me that the senior Jews will be first.
As my good friend, Dick Klitch" tells me, I have gone off the deep end. Maybe so, but you betcha I don't like what is happening and I am for the tea party and I hope they come up with the right candidates to oust all elitists who don't vote the people's wishes.

February 2010 now 2nd snowiest ever
Depending upon your perspective, this February has been one to forget -- or one to remember.
The 9.7 inches of snow measured yesterday -- the fourth most ever in a single day -- has made this February the second snowiest on record in Columbus.
Another 4.2 inches over the coming 12 days and 2010 will go down as the new champ, breaking the century-old record set in 1910.
February snowfall now totals 25.1 inches -- a whopping 21.3 inches above normal for the month.
For the season, we've received 44.9 inches at Port Columbus -- 25.6 inches more than typical.
Here are the Februaries with the most snowfall on record in Columbus, according to the National Weather Service:
1. 29.2" ... 1910
2. 25.1" ... 2010
3. 24.4" ... 2003
4. 19.6" ... 1914
5. 16.4" ... 1979
Yesterday's snowfall also raced into the top ten heaviest single-day, 24-hour snowfalls in Columbus, giving February 2010 two spots in the record book:
1. 15.5" ... March 8, 2008
2. 12.3" ... April 4, 1987
3. 11.9 ... Jan. 6, 1910
4. 9.7" ... Feb. 15, 2010

Hey Hitch, Just wondering. Even 100 years ago people had yardsticks and rulers. Stick it in the snow and measure. How scientific do you think it takes to do that? Sure, we're far more scientific now then we were then but I don't think measuring snow accurately back then would have been that hard or inaccurate.

My guess it was two guys named Jeb and Fred, who took a wild stab and said, "Make it over 29 inches, they'll never catch that total".

Unfortunately, I had neither Frank Pierson nor Bert Leach, although I certainly remember them. Jim Fout, Doc Yeagle and Jack Plymale each have fond memories of Bert Leach, a true Portsmouth sage.
Henrietta, Nellie and Marie were all excellent and Henrietta is also loved by the three amigos above.
I had her for Algebra, Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. Miss Trowbridge for geometry and Miss Niswonger for a freshman math course, I believe.
