While watching a little TV on Sunday instead of going to church, I watched a church in Atlanta honoring one of its senior pastors who had been retired many years. He was 92 at that time and I wondered why the church even bothered to ask the old gentleman to preach at that age.
After a warm welcome, introduction of this speaker, and as the applause quieted down, he rose from his high back chair and walked slowly, with great effort and a sliding gait to the podium. Without a note or written paper of any kind he placed both hands on the pulpit to steady himself and then quietly and slowly he began to speak.....
"When I was asked to come here today and talk to you, your pastor asked me to tell you what was the greatest lesson ever learned in my 50-odd years of preaching. I thought about it for a few days and boiled it down to just one thing that made the most difference in my life and sustained me through all my trials. The one thing that I could always rely on when tears and heartbreak and pain and fear and sorrow paralyzed me... The only thing that would comfort was this verse......... .. .

When he finished, the church was quiet.. You actually could hear his foot steps as he shuffled back to his chair. I don't believe I will ever forget it.

Although the official list of the top 500 fastest machines, which comes out every six months, is not due to be completed by Mr. Dongarra until next week, he said the Chinese computer “blows away the existing No. 1 machine.” He added, “We don’t close the books until Nov. 1, but I would say it is unlikely we will see a system that is faster.”
Officials from the Chinese research center, the National University of Defense Technology, are expected to reveal the computer’s performance on Thursday at a conference in Beijing. The center says it is “under the dual supervision of the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Education.”
The race to build the fastest supercomputer has become a source of national pride as these machines are valued for their ability to solve problems critical to national interests in areas like defense, energy, finance and science. Supercomputing technology also finds its way into mainstream business; oil and gas companies use it to find reservoirs and Wall Street traders use it for superquick automated trades. Procter & Gamble even uses supercomputers to make sure that Pringles go into cans without breaking.
And typically, research centers with large supercomputers are magnets for top scientific talent, adding significance to the presence of the machines well beyond just cranking through calculations.
Over the last decade, the Chinese have inched steadily up in the rankings of supercomputers. Tianhe-1A stands as the culmination of billions of dollars in investment and scientific development, as China has gone from a computing afterthought to a world technology superpower.
“What is scary about this is that the U.S. dominance in high-performance computing is at risk,” said Wu-chun Feng, a supercomputing expert and professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. “One could argue that this hits the foundation of our economic future.”
Modern supercomputers are built by combining thousands of small computer servers and using software to turn them into a single entity. In that sense, any organization with enough money and expertise can buy what amount to off-the-shelf components and create a fast machine.
The Chinese system follows that model by linking thousands upon thousands of chips made by the American companies Intel and Nvidia. But the secret sauce behind the system — and the technological achievement — is the interconnect, or networking technology, developed by Chinese researchers that shuttles data back and forth across the smaller computers at breakneck rates, Mr. Dongarra said.
“That technology was built by them,” Mr. Dongarra said. “They are taking supercomputing very seriously and making a deep commitment.”
The Chinese interconnect can handle data at about twice the speed of a common interconnect called InfiniBand used in many supercomputers.
For decades, the United States has developed most of the underlying technology that goes into the massive supercomputers and has built the largest, fastest machines at research laboratories and universities. Some of the top systems simulate the effects of nuclear weapons, while others predict the weather and aid in energy research.
In 2002, the United States lost its crown as supercomputing kingpin for the first time in stunning fashion when Japan unveiled a machine with more horsepower than the top 20 American computers combined. The United States government responded in kind, forming groups to plot a comeback and pouring money into supercomputing projects. The United States regained its leadership status in 2004, and has kept it, until now.
At the computing conference on Thursday in China, the researchers will discuss how they are using the new system for scientific research in fields like astrophysics and bio-molecular modeling. Tianhe-1A, which is housed in a building at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, can perform mathematical operations about 29 million times faster than one of the earliest supercomputers, built in 1976.
For the record, it performs 2.5 times 10 to the 15th power mathematical operations per second.
Mr. Dongarra said a long-running Chinese project to build chips to rival those from Intel and others remained under way and looked promising. “It’s not quite there yet, but it will be in a year or two,” he said.
He also said that in November, when the list comes out, he expected a second Chinese computer to be in the top five, culminating years of investment.
“The Japanese came out of nowhere and caught people off guard,” Mr. Feng said. “With China, you could see this one coming.”
Steven J. Wallach, a well-known computer designer, played down the importance of taking the top spot on the supercomputer rankings.
“It’s interesting, but it’s like getting to the four-minute mile,” Mr. Wallach said. “The world didn’t stop. This is just a snapshot in time.”
The research labs often spend weeks tuning their systems to perform well on the standard horsepower test. But just because a system can hammer through trillions of calculations per second does not mean it will do well on the specialized jobs that researchers want to use it for, Mr. Wallach added.
The United States has plans in place to make much faster machines out of proprietary components and to advance the software used by these systems so that they are easy for researchers to use. But those computers remain years away, and for now, China is king.

Muslim suicide bombers in Britain are set to begin a three-day strike on Monday in a dispute over the number of virgins they are entitled to in the afterlife.
Emergency talks with Al Qaeda have so far failed to produce an agreement. The unrest began last Tuesday when Al Qaeda announced that the number of virgins a suicide bomber would receive after his death will be cut by 25% this February, from 72 to only 60.
The rationale for the cut was the increase in recent years of the number of suicide bombings and a subsequent shortage of virgins in the afterlife.

Occupational Martyrs (BOOM) responded with a statement that this was unacceptable to its members
and immediately balloted for strike action.

Total put in the Bank $5,000.00. $100.00 of that you give to Washington .
This bill, spells it out that everyone will pay the Government 1% of their gross income. Page 9 states the House and Senate shall convene not later than November 23, 2010 and Page 11 states the vote on passage shall occur not later than December 23, 2010.

The bill is HR-4646 introduced by US Rep Peter DeFazio D-Oregon and US Senator Tom Harkin D-Iowa. It is now in committee and will probably not be brought out until after the Nov. elections. Suggest that you pass this along and also to your state senator and representative and US congressman and Senators.
One percent transaction tax is proposed President Obama's finance team is recommending a transaction tax. His plan is to sneak it in after the November election to keep it under the radar. This is a 1% tax on all transactions at any financial institution i. e. Banks, Credit Unions, etc.. Any deposit you make, or move around within your account, i. e. transfer to, will have a 1% tax charged. If your pay check or your social Security or whatever is direct deposit, 1% tax charged. If you hand carry a check in to deposit, 1% tax charged, If you take cash in to deposit, 1% tax charged. This is from the man who promised that if you make under $250,000 per year, you will not see one penny of new tax. Keep your eyes and ears open, you will be amazed at what you learn. Some will say aw it's just 1%... remember once the tax is there they can raise it at will.

Debt Free America Act - States as purposes of this Act the raising of sufficient revenue from a fee on transactions to eliminate the national debt within seven years and the phasing out of the individual income tax. Amends the Internal Revenue Code to impose a 1% fee, offset by a corresponding non-refundable income tax credit, on transactions that use a payment instrument, including any check, cash, credit card, transfer of stock, bonds, or other financial instrument. Defines "transaction" to include retail and wholesale sales, purchases of intermediate goods, and financial and intangible transactions. Establishes in the legislative branch the Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action to review the fiscal imbalance of the federal government and make recommendations to improve such imbalance. Provides for expedited consideration by Congress of Task Force recommendations. Repeals after 2017 the individual income tax, refundable and nonrefundable personal tax credits, and the alternative minimum tax (AMT) on individuals. Directs the Secretary of the Treasury to: (1) prioritize the repayment of the national debt to protect the fiscal stability of the United States ; and (2) study and report to Congress on the implementation of this Act.

This was the huge photograph on the front page of today’s edition of The Telegraph, showing rescued miner Mario Sepulveda. As I glanced at it, something looked very familiar... not just the word “Jesus” on the sleeve of his t-shirt but the font. Upon looking closer I saw all the words “The Jesus Film Project”.
It seems the national ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ in Chile provided each of the miners with a pale yellow t-shirt to wear for their appearance on the surface. And that wasn’t all. In the early days of the rescue drilling, 33 MP3 players were sent down to the miners, containing the audio version of the JESUS film and an ample portion of the Bible.
One of the miners, Jose Samuel, sent a letter up the Dove (long, narrow metal canister that shuttled supplies and correspondence) to the CCC national director. Here is a portion of his words:
"I want to express my appreciation for this great blessing for me and my co-workers, it will be very good for our edification" (He is talking about the MP3's of the Bible & Jesus film)
"I am well because Christ lives in me"
"We have prayer services at 12 a.m. and 6 p.m."
"I ask all of you for pray not only for us here, but for all the lost people in the world"
This has been a remarkable story with God getting much more than an occasional mention! Three of those miners were evangelical Christians and I’m sure many others were God-fearers and may well have given their lives to Christ during their ordeal through the witness of these three brothers in Christ.
Back to the t-shirts... Printed on the front was the Chilean national flag and the words Thank you Lord in English and Spanish. On the other sleeve was the CCC Int’l logo and the name of our ministry in Chile. (Here is a picture of the oldest miner, Mario Gomez, praying upon his exit from the capsule.)
Our national director has asked us to pray for the salvation of all the miners, that they might acknowledge the one who has rescued them from sin and judgment, even as they continue to be so thankful for their deliverance from certain physical death.
It is such a privilege for Donna and me to serve alongside our 25,000 missionary colleagues – creative people like our national director in Chile who found a way to bring the JESUS film and the Bible to the ears of the trapped miners. Share this email with friends to encourage them with the fact God is able to get his Good News anywhere on earth and under it, as well!

I needed this powerful message in my life right now. I haven't faced the horrible death these miners might well have suffered without the ingenuity, faithfulness and prayers of all who earnestly gave their best to rescue them through the 'dove' and the eventual safety tunnel.
A close friend told me recently that I used to be a wonderful man, but I have recently, in my old age, became a grouch. That friend also said that perhaps she has become a bitch in her old age. That struck me right in the psyche (as a kick in the groin might have). I have considered myself a Christian Conservative and that is what I want to portray with my life and in my blog.
I anticipated a weekend of gratefulness as I toured the construction to replace the World Trade Center in NYC Friday. My day in the city was not all enjoyable, except for a new friend and a bona fide New Yorker just made in recent years, Jim Agostine. He took me on a walking tour through the area. I earnestly prayed for our world's people, as I looked over the scenes. Otherwise the walk later down Broadway, past Wall Street's Bull, to the Staten Island Fairy with my long lasting planar faciatis in my left foot; the windy cold ride over and back from Staten Island; and getting utterly lost on the NYC subway system drained much of my anticipated joy. This soon to be 78 year old man was very exhausted. I found a seat in the basement floor of Rockefeller and watched ice skaters out the large windows while in a frustrated state of mind. The Fun Bus back home picked us up at the Center a few hours later.
Some 'tough looking, jive talking" black subway dwellers showed me some mercy and a black lady of around fifty took me across the street to a different subway and sent me on my way to a seven stop ride to Rockefeller Center in Manhattan from the Brooklyn suburb I had found myself in. I weakly thanked them and gave the young lady a dollar, she reluctantly took. I had been through twenty or more stops in my confusion, but I was also grateful for the $8.25 day pass I bought from our Fun Bus tour guide Rebecca, which allowed me to exit and enter the subway so many times.
I, as all Christians do, want to portray Christ in my life. I fervently believe that Jesus would have not become a grouch if he had spent more than his 33 years on earth. His stories gave us only one instance of anger as he chased the money changers from the Temple grounds. He was a consistently wise and gentle human being who happened to be Son of our Holy Father and who genuinely showed His wonderful love to all people.
I thank all of the miners and their faithfulness and the faithfulness of those who moved to achieving their physical and spiritual salvation. Would that all people of different faiths could appreciate the miners' story at this time. Christian- 'like Christ'? I wonder about me but I want to be more like Him.
