Five Portsmouth guys met at Upper Arlingon's Chef-Nette for breakfast yesterday morning.
Nelson smiled a little in the second pic.
We will exclude the OHSAA Director if he pulls another fast one on us like paying the bills and the tips at the chef-Nette Yesterday. Before he left after a little over an hour, he told us that he wants to know when he might make it again. He told me that his secretary, Molly, makes his schedule and he tries hard to keep up. He truly enjoys his job and its myriad duties.
The popular director told us a few interesting stories as did each person at the breakfast. Dick Hansgen has visited most every continent except Australia and one other in his work. Dick has had Portsmouth reminders in various ports as a Navy guy in the fifties. Nelson and Frank Hunter and Jack Plymale and a few other Portsmouth guys were in the same Ohio state fraternity.
I am trying to awake my steel trap mind (although it has been at the bottom of the salty ocean for a while) of all the good stories. Portsmouth streets, neighborhoods, schools, people, etc. Dr. Ross related, when somebody mentioned Portsmouth Notre Dame, that it is now the smallest school in attendance in Ohio, with only twenty-five graduates, if my poor hearing has not failed me again. I believe he said that there are 717 football teams and 800 some basketball teams. Lucasville Valley plays here at Westerville Central tonight in the Regional finals and I may attend.
We took Frank Hunter's and Blaine Bierley's names in vain as they were not there to defend themselves. I just talked with Smoky Gibson's wife, Alice, who told me that he has good and bad days but was just not up to it and, in fact, has not been out of the house all week. I was unable to get Nita this afternoon to find out about our friend, Flip Spriggs.

For Christian American readers of this blog:
I wish to incite all Christians to rise up and take back the United States of America with all of God's manifold blessings. We want the free allowance of the Bible and prayers allowed again in schools, halls of justice, and all governing bodies. We don't seek a theocracy until Jesus returns to earth because all men are weak and power corrupts the very best of them.
We want to be a kinder and gentler people without slavery or condescension to any.
The world seems to be in a time of discontent among the populace. Christians should not fear. God is Love, shown best through Jesus Christ. God is still in control. All Glory to our Creator and to our God!
A favorite quote from my good friend, Jack Plymale, which I appreciate:
"Wars are planned by old men,in council rooms apart. They plan for greater armament, they map the battle chart, but: where sightless eyes stare out, beyond life's vanished joys, I've noticed, somehow, all the dead and mamed are hardly more than boys(Grantland Rice per our mutual friend, Sarah Rapp)."
Thanks Jack!
I must admit that I do not check authenticity of my posts. If anyone can tell me of a non-biased arbitrator, I will attempt to do so more regularly. I know of no such arbitrator for the internet.

"Burnt toast and coffee time" Bill Dawson- Portsmouth
Does this remind Portsmouth Ohio people of Bill Dawson's "Burnt toast and coffee time" on WNXT radio? Bill was iconic for P'Town before the icon name was invented. Bill had personality 'out the gazoo' and Coach Bill Rohr use him to add salt and pepper to the game rallies in the PHS auditorium. He became a friend to Jeanie and me at Christ's Community Church through Scott Rawlings. The Church League softball was a lot of fun, while not as competitive as the B&B loan teams and their ilk. Bill pitched for the Trinity Methodist Church team and told Scott in my presence once: "I could never get this guy out." Meaning me, (Blush). Please realize now that Scott is getting older and might not remember this occasion for me. Scott is a tad younger than me though.
Bill became a wonderful Christian and was on a Christian station here in the Columbus area for a while in his later career.
Please God, grant our friend Bill Dawson real rest and peace and a lot of love.

Mrs. Beeton's salt and pepper sandwich Thanks Luis!

Mrs Beeton's salt and pepper toast sandwich is UK's 'cheapest lunch'
Britain's 'cheapest' lunchtime meal has been unveiled by scientists - the toast sandwich. The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is reviving the mid-Victorian dish, which, unsurprisingly, consists of two slices of bread around a slice of toast. The society is so confident in the repast, it will offer £200 to anyone who can create a cheaper alternative.
The meal, costing 7.5 pence, was created by Victorian food writer Mrs Beeton. It is taken from Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management which became a best-seller after its appearance 150 years ago next month. To celebrate that anniversary, the RSC decided to focus on meals that reflected "stern days" to come in Britain, rather than one of the book's many "table-groaning creations".
The meal was recreated by a chef at the RSC on Wednesday and offered to people outside their London offices. The RSC's Dr John Emsley said: "You simply put a piece of dry toast between two slices of bread and butter, with salt and pepper to taste. I've tried it and it's surprisingly nice to eat and quite filling. I would emphasise that toast sandwiches are also good at saving you calories as well as money, provided you only have one toast sandwich for lunch and nothing else."
The toast sandwich provides about 330 calories, and consumers could opt for the healthier alternative of margarine instead of butter - an ingredient not available to Mrs Beeton because she was writing before it was invented. RSC employee Jon Edwards said: "In my student days I thought a meal of '9p noodles' from Tesco was the epitome of thrift - but a toast sandwich is tastier, quicker, has more calories and comes in at just 7.5p."

Idiocy in seven days ... thanks Dr. Hovermale!
Subject: Seven days until idiocy
Dear Rob,
In just seven days, the super committee is required to present a bipartisan agreement to Congress and, in what should be a shocking development, word yesterday is that they were working on a “two-part solution" or, as Rep. Xavier Becera commented, a “multi-part solution.” Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta warned that the trigger to slash defense spending by $600 billion if a deal could not be reached would lead to the smallest ground force since 1940, the smallest number of ships since 1915, and the smallest Air Force in its history! This would cripple our military right in the middle of serious global unrest!
That a “super committee” was formed with triggers that would literally cripple our ability to protect our interests around the world is unforgivable, and the direct result of failed leadership. With a gun pointed toward things as important as Medicare and Defense, this president has the audacity to go to Australia and proclaim that “this region is going to be the engine of economic growth for a long time.” This, following comments by President Obama that Americans are “a little bit lazy.”
This country is suffering from a severe lack of competent leadership, and the only solution is to force President Obama to defend his radical policies. Speaker Gingrich has the knowledge, trust, and experience to handle a foreign policy crisis abroad and a leadership crisis here at home. Speaker Gingrich is the only candidate who can claim that he has successfully dealt with the kind of serious national problems our nation is facing. Looking forward, this nation needs Speaker Gingrich to become President Gingrich.
This campaign, once left for dead, is now the talk of the nation. Clearly the American people are providing us with the momentum and resources we need to win, and we pledge to continue to run a substantive campaign of ideas. Please support Speaker Gingrich’s candidacy by making a generous contribution today. Funds raised will be used to build the political organizations necessary to secure electoral victories.
Time is of the essence with voting starting on January 3rd! It will be here in a blink and this is our chance to seize the moment! Please don’t let this opportunity to elect an experienced leader pass us by; support this campaign today!
Thank You,
Michael Krull

Gingrich looks best to beat o SamKat editorial
Jonah Goldberg and Thomas Sowell have interesting articles on the Columbus Dispatch Forum page today (11-16-11). Neither Jonah nor Sowell tout Gingrich especially; however, I have read some of Gingrich's books and listened to some of his talks. He won't be willy-nilly in attacking the o in debates.
Surely as we have 'occupy whatevers', the national media will attempt their 'dig and destroy' tactics as they have any viable conservative candidate. Soros will add whatever cash the left requires. Newt is tough enough to withstand all of that in my humble opinion. If he picks Perry, Bachman, or Palin, or whomever, they each can help extract this 'poison' from our presidency, which is little o. We have suffered through a phony "Commander in Chief" and a person of little known history who has qualified to become a 'man without a country'.
And while I am about that, I particularly admire the stick-to-it-iveness of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and their ilk. O would surely love to get Fox News off the air. Given another four years in office, he and his czars might very well shut off most of our 'free speech'.
