Welcome

Welcome to my blog http://www.skegley.blogspot.com/ . CAVEAT LECTOR- Let the reader beware. This is a Christian Conservative blog. It is not meant to offend anyone. Please feel free to ignore this blog, but also feel free to browse and comment on my posts! You may also scroll down to respond to any post.

For Christian American readers of this blog:

I wish to incite all Christians to rise up and take back the United States of America with all of God's manifold blessings. We want the free allowance of the Bible and prayers allowed again in schools, halls of justice, and all governing bodies. We don't seek a theocracy until Jesus returns to earth because all men are weak and power corrupts the very best of them.
We want to be a kinder and gentler people without slavery or condescension to any.

The world seems to be in a time of discontent among the populace. Christians should not fear. God is Love, shown best through Jesus Christ. God is still in control. All Glory to our Creator and to our God!

A favorite quote from my good friend, Jack Plymale, which I appreciate:

"Wars are planned by old men,in council rooms apart. They plan for greater armament, they map the battle chart, but: where sightless eyes stare out, beyond life's vanished joys, I've noticed, somehow, all the dead and mamed are hardly more than boys(Grantland Rice per our mutual friend, Sarah Rapp)."

Thanks Jack!

I must admit that I do not check authenticity of my posts. If anyone can tell me of a non-biased arbitrator, I will attempt to do so more regularly. I know of no such arbitrator for the internet.

... I know it's not directly about warbirds but rather a battleship, (there are a couple OS2U photos) but if you need a connection? well perhaps we wouldn't have as many warbirds, or even any at all, if it weren't for the sinking of the USS Arizona? just a thought ... Photo source: All the posted photos in this thread, unless stated otherwise, came from commons-Wikimedia.org

So I hope ya all don't mind a thread to once again remember the Arizona, the veterans and Pearl Harbor day. The PH veterans earned it. All of them did.
So here's some interesting photos showing the USS Arizona from festive beginning to tragic end. Most have a bit of info to go along with them.

Interesting pictures of Arizona I hadn't seen before - thanks Mark! FDR is in there as the Asst. Sec of the Navy.

One of the USS Arizona's bells is in the bell tower at the University of Arizona, which is rung every December 7. I attended a few of the events when I was a student there.

I'm planning to meet with Col. Robert Thacker this Sunday to do a video interview. He was flying one of B-17E's that flew into Pearl Harbor that fateful morning. He flew 49 missions in the Pacific and 31 more in the 8thAF, 384th Bomb Group as the group's Deputy CO.

Here is the USS Arizona Memorial located to the east of the State Capitol building in Phoenix.
The distance for the Flag poles to the markers to the west approximate the lengths of the USS Arizona and the USS Missouri.

14in Gun from the USS Arizona, on Dec 7, this gun was mounted on the USS Nevada, it was originally fitted on the Arizona and removed for overhaul before being installed on the Nevada.

Is it true that Elvis Presley privately paid for the current Arizona Memorial atop the hull?

The answer to your question is answered in detail here:

http://www.elvispresleymusic.com.au/pic ... 3vxU2.dpbs

In short his 1961 concert raised a little over 10% of the necessary 500k required. He did not perform "on the hull".

Wow. I had first read about Thacker in Dale Smith's memoirs "Screaming Eagle"...I'm sure you have a copy. It's probably well within my top 10 favorite books on World War II and then learned he was also on the flight of B-17s that literally stumbled right into the middle of a war. Hope your interview goes well and would love to see the completed product.

Mark: Thanks again for digging up some real unique gems. I think most of us here are pretty well versed on the topic and have seen most of the previously published pictures at one point or another. It's definitely a real thrill to see something new and different.

Always welcome fellas. It's a pleasure to try to post rare and/or unique stuff. I was hesitant to post 'boat pics' on a 'plane site' ... But just had to do it as the 7th of December is always a special date for many of us regardless of passions for boats or planes. It's a day to honor and remember them both and those who manned them.

I have some more good stuff coming ....

Speaking of Dec. 7 - any other WIXers share a Dec. 7 birthday? Having a birthday on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is one of the reasons I first became interested in WWII history.

Keep those pics coming, Mark! :drink3:

Great shots, appraciated. I work less than a mile from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth VA, so especially appreciated the shots from that shipyard in 1931. I can see the Wisconsin from my office window. Some of the ways, buildings and water towers at the shipyard are still there and look exactly the same. Large cranes have been swapped out, but they are currently debating what to do with the giant, very distinctive hammerhead crane (not pictured). Was used for major turret assemblies such as barrels etc in WWII. Some want a historical designation, others say scrap it.

My eldest son's birthday is on the 7th of December and my youngest's is June 6th. I have no excuse for forgetting their birthdays.

Great pictures Mark!

This bird can fish ... thx Ramey H!

You may have seen this before but I love it. What a bird!

INCREDIBLE - BOTH THE BIRD AND THE PHOTOGRAPHY

Hard to believe this Osprey got 5-6 fish at a time and then got a flounder under 3 feet of
water and made off with what looks to be a 5+ lb steel-head.  Have you ever seen a bird
shake water off like a dog does?  Wouldn't want to get in its way when its eyes are
locked onto you and his talons are in the "load" position.  It's talons are amazing.  Notice how as soon as possible the Osprey turns his prey head-first into the wind to cut down on wind resistance.

Here are 3 sequences in this one video:
1st sequence - catches half a dozen fish in one strike.
2nd sequence - plunges talons into deep water to grab the prey.
3rd sequence - captures a big old fish that looks as if it weighs more than he does.
This is fun to watch.

Very Cool - Amazing

Take a look at this!  It is amazing!!

Whispering chimes Thanks Ramey H!

Whispering Chimes........
The National Veteran's Art Museum in Chicago has an unusual work of art which you may not have even known existed!
When visitors first enter the museum, they will hear a sound like wind chimes coming from above them and their attention will be drawn upward 24 feet to the ceiling of the two-story high atrium.

The dog tags of the more than 58,000 service men and women who died in the Vietnam War, were hung from the ceiling of the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago on Veterans Day, November 11, 2010. The 10-by-40-foot sculpture, entitled Above & Beyond, was designed by Ned Broderick and Richard Stein.

The thousands of metal dog tags are suspended 24 feet in the air, 1 inch apart, from fine lines that allow them to move and chime with shifting air currents. Museum employees using a kiosk and laser pointer help visitors locate the exact dog tag with the imprinted name of a lost friend or relative.

The Buffet Rule ... Thx Nita E!

Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.

I REPORT, YOU DECIDE.

The BUFFETT Rule

We must support this - pass it on and let’s see if these idiots understand what people pressure is all about.

Salary of retired US Presidents .. . . . .. . . . . .. . $180,000 FOR LIFE

Salary of House/Senate members .. . . . .. . . . $174,000 FOR LIFE This is stupid

Salary of Speaker of the House .. . . . .. . . . . $223,500 FOR LIFE This is really stupid

Salary of Majority/Minority Leaders . . .. . . . . $193,400 FOR LIFE Ditto last line

Average Salary of a teacher . . .. . . . .. . . . . .. .. $40,065

Average Salary of a deployed Soldier . . .. . . .. $38,000

I think we found where the cuts should be made! If you agree pass it on, as I just did.

Warren Buffet, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling:

"I could end the deficit in five minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election".

The 26th Amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only three months and eight days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971 - before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc.

Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took one (1) year or less to become the law of the land - all because of public pressure.

Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.

Congressional Reform Act of 2015

1. No Tenure / No Pension.  A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office.

2. Congress (past, present, & future) participates in Social Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/1/15. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.

Congress made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and go back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people, then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Don't you think it's time?

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!

If you agree, pass it on. If not, delete.
