I am just finishing my eighth book, Bob. It takes a while to do a book, normally a year. None know how many years are left in our lives.
My earlier years were shared with neighborhood kids around McConnell ave. and Vinton and normally at Mound Park just up McConnell from us. Ronnie Walters was on his crutches from an early age and he moved faster on those helpers than most any of us could run. Skip Beekman and his sister Nancy, Walt Rowe and his sister, Barbara Swishelm (Married Carole Howell, the Trojan and Ohio State star). Nancy McFarland (Schlichter), the Tannions and others lived there. Our 1227 McConnell address was just above the flood marks of 1937. Jack Duschinski was your immediate neighbor on one side where Lovell Meadows and his beautiful olive skinned sister lived before. On your north was Pidgy and Jim Zeisler. C.A,. Hartley lived on Vinton later with his mother and sisters. Bob Staley and Don Ginn lived up the street a bit. Bill and Nancy Thomas, the Gemperlines and later Boomer with Bill and Nancy Thomas and Bill and Fred Colliers and their brood also lived closer to the park.
After you passed all of those kids you arrived at Mound Park, the true "Cultural Center of Our Universe".
There the Clark twins, Jim Smith, Don Flowers and I, kids in my grade at Highland School, played king of the hill and football and other things from dawn to dusk. Later we met 'Looney and Lyles' a seemingly inseparable pair, the Moseleys, Steve Clark and his brothers, and played baseball in the deserted dirt court tennis courts. We were Babe Ruth, Hank Sauer (Cincy Reds), and Eddie Miller as the towering hits soared 100 feet or so over the eight foot fence in left and center field and gave us the 'star' thrill.
Dick Klitch and his dad were often coaching (Dick was a coach on the field even then) the Grandview Cubs. So many urchins shared the fun of that park. My faded memory tells me that Mr. Labold, who donated Labold field down by the stadia, donated the park and had willed it to the kids who played there. The local power people in Portsmouth politics reportedly won that away from us, but, even if the will came to million bucks, there were so many of us urchins we may have received a nickel apiece. :)
I had a few fist fights in the park and I know many others did. There were always instant audiences for the fisticuff events that happened on the spot. Ray Benner had the most, no doubt. Ray was tough but he tried Don Thomas, our resident giant and Dave, Mary, and Earl's brother, but never could beat Don as Don tells me now, matter-of-factly. I missed all of those Thomas-Benner events, but they were mainly on their way to school. Shorty, whom Ray protected as a little brother, probably witnessed all of them. Ray was a neighbor of Shorty Vallance and his sister, Wayne Widdig, Donnie Widdig and sister(s) on Logan extending westward from the park and Highland School. We hardly saw Wayne through the early forties when I was 8 to 12 years old. He, my brother, Ted Dunham, and so many others were fighting in WW II, the Big One, which hasn't stopped all wars as was hoped and died for. When he returned though and they had the great softball tournaments in Mound Park, Wayne became that unbeatable fast pitch pitcher, almost in the class of Eddie Feigner, The King of 'The King and His Court".
Mound Park was like Highland School's home turf for grade school ball games and Sunday afternoon football games. Our A, B, and C teams played there a lot.
There Bob. You got my memories flowing a little. There may be a few books from the park and our neighborhood. Jack Plymale, Frank Hunter, Blaine Bierley, my deceased brother-in-law, Don Lundy and many others could tell of the Mabert Road people, such as the storied Ray Pelfrey, east of us park urchins. Al Oliver, Larry Hisle, and the many fine black athletes of Portsmouth dearly love their kid days at Bannon Park and the Fourteenth Street Community Center. It isn't only for me to tell. My brothers George, Jim, and Paul have tales of their park eras. It was mostly a 'boys park' as parents probably didn't want their young girls among us rough necks.
Gib Lakeman and Gus Thompson and their ilk came later after 1945 and the wars end. We heard many war stories, some gruesome, in the park during the 52-20 days. The vets received $20 a week for 52 weeks, a full year, which afforded them loafing days in the park. They had terrific baseball pepper drills with line drives and hard grounders. Lee Brady, Don Delaney, Red Glasgow, Laken Warnock, Gib, Gus, and so many fine athletes hit and fielded the line drive shots in rapid succession. Of course, Lamoin Elliott, Ray Pelfrey, Walt Young, and Gib Lakeman liked to boot punts from the Sugar Bowl west side of the park towards the tennis courts on the east side.
How lucky we were, Bob and Ron! Besides that we had the Terrace Club Swimming Pool and stories there.

Long letter to the PUSA but worth your while. Thanks Shovers!
My oldest son is 54 and the youngest is 48. this 53 year old lady says so much to the arrogant one in office of PUSA that should let him know how we Tea Party people feel. m He isn't really concerned with that.
I would only add that if immigrants want to come in legally they are certainly welcome.

I am a home grown American citizen, 53, registered Democrat all my life. Before the last presidential election I registered as a Republican because I no longer felt the Democratic Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. Now I no longer feel the Republican Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. The fact is I no longer feel any political party or representative in Washington represents my views or works to pursue the issues important to me. Instead, we are burdened with Congressional Dukes and Duchesses who think they know better than the citizens they are supposed to represent.
There must be someone. Please tell me who you are. Please stand up and tell me that you are there and that you're willing to fight for our Constitution as it was written. Please stand up now.
You might ask yourself what my views and issues are that I would feel so horribly disenfranchised by both major political parties. What kind of nut-job am I? Well, these briefly are the views and issues for which I seek representation:
One, illegal immigration. I want you to stop coddling illegal immigrants and secure our borders. Close the underground tunnels. Stop the violence and the trafficking in drugs and people. No amnesty, not again. Been there, done that, no resolution. P.S., I'm not a racist. This is not to be confused with legal immigration.
Two, the STIMULUS bill. I want it repealed and I want no further funding supplied to it. We told you no, but you did it anyway. I want the remaining unfunded 95% repealed. Freeze, repeal.
Three: Czars. I want the circumvention of our constitutional checks and balances stopped immediately. Fire the czars. No more czars. Government officials answer to the process, not to the president. Stop trampling on our Constitution, and honor it.
Four, cap and trade. The debate on global warming is not over. There are many conflicting opinions and it is too soon for this radical legislation. Quit throwing our nation into politically-correct quicksand.
Five, universal healthcare. I will not be rushed into another expensive decision that will burden me, my children and grandchildren. Don't you dare try to pass this in the middle of the night without even reading it. Slow down! Fix only what is broken -- we have the best health care system in the world -- and test any new program in one or two states first.
Six, growing government control. I want states rights and sovereignty fully restored. I want less government in my life, not more. More is not better! Shrink it down. Mind your own business. You have enough to take care of with your real [Constitutional] obligations. Why don't you start there?
Seven, ACORN. I do not want ACORN and its affiliates in charge of our 2010 census. I want them investigated. I also do not want mandatory escrow fees contributed to them every time on every real estate deal that closes -- how did they pull that one off? Stop the funding to ACORN and its affiliates pending impartial audits and investigations. I do not trust them with taking the census with our taxpayer money. I don't trust them with any of our taxpayer money. Face up to the allegations against them and get it resolved before taxpayers get any more involved with them. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, hello. Stop protecting your political buddies. You work for us, the people. Investigate.
Eight, redistribution of wealth. No, no, no. I work for my money. It is mine. I have always worked for people with more money than I have because they gave me jobs -- and that is the only redistribution of wealth that I will support. I never got a job from a poor person! Why do you want me to hate my employers? And what do you have against shareholders making a profit?
Nine, charitable contributions. Although I never got a job from a poor person, I have helped many in need. Charity belongs in our local communities, where we know our needs best and can use our local talent and our local resources. Butt out, please. We want to do it ourselves.
Ten, corporate bailouts. Knock it off. Every company must sink or swim like the rest of us. If there are hard times ahead, we'll be better off just getting into it and letting the strong survive. Quick and painful. (Have you ever ripped off a Band-Aid?) We will pull together. Great things happen in America under great hardship. Give us the chance to innovate. We cannot disappoint you more than you have disappointed us.
Eleven, transparency and accountability. How about it? No, really, how about it? Let's have it. Let's say we give the buzzwords a rest and have some straight honest talk. Please stop trying to manipulate and appease me with clever wording. I am not the idiot you obviously take me for. Stop sneaking around and meeting in back rooms making deals with your friends. It will only be a prelude to your criminal investigation. Stop hiding things from me.
Twelve, unprecedented quick spending. Stop it now. Take a breath. Listen to the people. Slow down and get some input from non-politicians and experts on the subject. Stop making everything an emergency. Stop speed-reading our bills into law. I am not an activist. I am not a community organizer. Nor am I a terrorist, a militant or a violent person. I am a parent and a grandparent. I work. I'm busy. I am busy, and I am tired. I thought we elected competent people to take care of the business of government so that we could work, raise our families, pay our bills, have a little recreation, complain about taxes, endure our hardships, pursue our personal goals, cut our lawn, wash our cars on the weekends and be responsible contributing members of society and teach our children to be the same all while living in the home of the free and land of the brave.
I entrusted you with upholding the Constitution. I believed in the checks and balances to keep from getting far off course. What happened? You are very far off course. Do you really think I find humor in the hiring of a speed reader to unintelligently ramble all through a bill that you signed into law without knowing what it contained? I do not. It is a mockery of the responsibility I have entrusted to you. It is a slap in the face. I am not laughing at your arrogance. Why is it that I feel as if you would not trust me to make a single decision about my own life and how I would live it but you should expect that I should trust you with the debt that you have laid on all of us and our children? We did not want the TARP bill. We said no. We would repeal it if we could. I am sure that we still cannot. From my perspective, it seems that all of you have gone insane. I also know that I am far from alone in these feelings. Do you honestly feel that your current pursuits have merit to patriotic Americans? We want it to stop. We want to put the brakes on everything that is being rushed by us and forced upon us. We want our voice back. You have forced us to put our lives on hold to straighten out the mess that you are making. We will have to give up our vacations, our time spent with our children, any relaxation time we may have had and money we cannot afford to spend on bringing our concerns to Washington . Our president often knows all the right buzzwords like unsustainable. Well, no kidding.. How many tens of thousands of dollars did the focus group cost to come up with that word? We don't want your overpriced words. Stop treating us like we're morons.
We want all of you to stop focusing on your reelection and do the job we want done, not the job you want done or the job your party wants done. You work for us and at this rate I guarantee you not for long because we are coming. We will be heard and we will be represented. You think we're so busy with our lives that we will never come for you? You have awakened us, the patriotic freedom spirit so strong and so powerful that it had been sleeping too long. You have pushed us too far. Our numbers are great. They may surprise you. STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening
Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this...
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally . He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other,that is also an indication of a stroke.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other,that is also an indication of a stroke.

The Silent Sermon- Thanks Dr. Hovermale!
THE SILENT SERMON
A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services
regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks, the pastor decided to visit
him.
It was a chilly evening. The pastor found the man at home alone, sitting
before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for his pastor's visit, the man
welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited.
The pastor made himself at home but said nothing. In the grave silence, he
contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some
minutes, the pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly
burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone then he sat
back in his chair, still silent.
The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember's
flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire
was no more. Soon it was cold and dead.
Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The pastor glanced
at his watch and realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked
up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire.
Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth of the
burning coals around it.
As the pastor reached the door to leave, his host said with a tear running
down his cheek, 'Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the
fiery sermon. I will be back in church next Sunday'.
We live in a world today, which tries to say too much with too little.
Consequently, few listen. Sometimes the best sermons are the ones left
unspoken.

I agree but I still worry that Americans voted this guy into the office of the Presidency and he has access to all of our military and our defense. Every representative of the USA should withstand a security clearance as I, and all employees did at Goodyear Atomic back in the fifties. None of the voted-in people must now. That shocks me!
He can destroy more than a group of airplane attacks on heavily populated areas did on 911. What will osama have him do before we get a chance to vote him and all elitistts, so-called representatives, Democrats and republicans, out of office?
I, in my worry, hope that I am wrong, but the blatant lies o spreads are apparently not seen by the libs who spearheaded his election. My hope lies in the cliche' that "I've had a lot of troubles in my life, but most of them never happened". That is a definition of worry.
I tend not to be a worrier, but now ... And I still believe that our God is in control. Catastrophes still happen without ceasing, but God remains omnipotent and none can fool Him.

I had no silver spoon at birth which is how most of us former blue collar family members have looked at the republicans. All incumbent elitists D or R, have filled their pockets at the expense of the USA people and I, for one, don't like it. Get a new crew in by voting. Move for term limits, tort reform, and a true health care reform in which doctors, nurses, former patients,insurance companies, and, least of all- Politicians- participate.

I watched intently today the “OBAMACARE SUMMIT” as it was called. Frankly, I called it a continuation of "THE GREAT DIVIDE" that we have in this country, through the Democratic misinformation campaign that is going on. If one watched the proceedings today, there is a very clear choice of which way this country is to go: towards socialism with the Democrats; or away from socialism with the Republicans. The two different ideologies were very distinctive and very different! The choice should now crystal clear in the minds of most Americans.
Mr. Obama insulted Americans today. During the “Healthcare Reconciliation Summit” held today with Congressional leaders, Mr. Obama callously talked about the strong possibility of a parliamentary “reconciliation” effort that only requires 50 U. S. Senate votes to pass. He charged, “You know, this issue of reconciliation has been brought up. Again, I think the American people aren’t always all that interested in procedures inside the Senate. I do think they want a vote on how we’re going to move this forward."
What this means is that Barack Obama is prepared to give the “green light” for Congressional leadership to move ahead with the so-called “nuclear option” or “budget reconciliation” parliamentary procedure! This will be an attempt to ignore the Rules of the U. S. Senate and block debate on, and any filibuster against, OBAMACARE! We must fight this “end run” tactic, and WE MUST STOP OBAMACARE!!
According to the Gallup poll, Americans OPPOSE the use of the “reconciliation” strategy! The latest Quinnipiac University National Poll shows, "American voters still disapprove 54 – 35 percent of Obama’s Health Care Reform Plan, but they say 52 – 44 percent they want Congress and the President to keep trying on health care reform rather than giving up and moving on to other matters."
At today's Summit, Vice-President Biden stated, "I am always reluctant after being here 37 years to tell people what the American people think. I think it requires a little bit of humility to be able to know what the American people think. And I don’t." Mr. Vice-President, you need to LISTEN to the American people---54 percent oppose OBAMACARE!!

I watched intently today the “OBAMACARE SUMMIT” as it was called. Frankly, I called it a continuation of "THE GREAT DIVIDE" that we have in this country, through the Democratic misinformation campaign that is going on. If one watched the proceedings today, there is a very clear choice of which way this country is to go: towards socialism with the Democrats; or away from socialism with the Republicans. The two different ideologies were very distinctive and very different! The choice should now crystal clear in the minds of most Americans.
Mr. Obama insulted Americans today. During the “Healthcare Reconciliation Summit” held today with Congressional leaders, Mr. Obama callously talked about the strong possibility of a parliamentary “reconciliation” effort that only requires 50 U. S. Senate votes to pass. He charged, “You know, this issue of reconciliation has been brought up. Again, I think the American people aren’t always all that interested in procedures inside the Senate. I do think they want a vote on how we’re going to move this forward."
What this means is that Barack Obama is prepared to give the “green light” for Congressional leadership to move ahead with the so-called “nuclear option” or “budget reconciliation” parliamentary procedure! This will be an attempt to ignore the Rules of the U. S. Senate and block debate on, and any filibuster against, OBAMACARE! We must fight this “end run” tactic, and WE MUST STOP OBAMACARE!!
According to the Gallup poll, Americans OPPOSE the use of the “reconciliation” strategy! Today’s Gallup poll states, “By a larger 52% to 39% margin, Americans... oppose the Democrats in the Senate using a reconciliation procedure to avoid a possible Republican filibuster and pass a bill by a simple majority vote."

Americans agree with Republicans. They want a fresh start on health care. According to a recent CNN poll, "73 percent of Americans say, ‘Lawmakers should work on an entirely new bill’ or ‘stop all work.'"
NOW, more than ever, I saw the true intentions---all six hours and 22 minutes worth of dialogue and debate. Mr. Obama and the liberal Democrats in the House and Senate are determined to do whatever it takes to force OBAMACARE down our throats! WE MUST STOP OBAMACARE, AND WE MUST STOP IT NOW!
In one of the most heated dialogue sessions of this so-called “reconciliation summit” former Republican Presidential Nominee and U. S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) discussed that most Americans were against any “backroom deals” just to pass healthcare reform. Mr. Obama brushed aside that charge, claiming that Senator McCain was back to his usual politics.
That’s right, my friend, the Democrats STILL DON’T GET IT!! The Chicago-style, backroom, deals that have permeated this year-long debate on OBAMACARE have sickened most Americans. And we’re not going to take it anymore! We must force into the open, and stop, the “backroom deals!" No more “special privileges” for only those who live in Nebraska! No more special funding only for those who live in Louisiana. THE BRIBES HAVE GOT TO STOP
You know, a different kind of "reconciliation" was the goal of the Democrats all along!
The Republican side was well prepared; and even the liberal news media noticed. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer said, "It looks like the Republicans certainly showed up ready to play."
CNN’s David Gergen stated, "The folks at the White House just must be kicking themselves right now. They thought that coming out of Baltimore when the President went in and was mesmerizing and commanding in front of the House Republicans that he could do that again here today. That would revive health care and would change the public opinion about their health care bill and they can go on to victory. Just the opposite has happened."
We must keep the pressure on Congress, because some Americans might not have caught the “great divide” and the “great difference” that was so obvious today at this summit. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi expressed, "Health care is entitlement reform." Wow. How wrong she is. Representative Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) said, "Health care inflation is driving us (the United States) off a cliff!"
Representative Peter Rookam (R-IL) eloquently stated, "Medicaid is a flawed foundation!" He also intimated that Democrats were at the summit not to bring Members of Congress together, but to see what it would take to pass their bill.
U. S. Senator Kent Conrad, a Democrat, admitted, "Medicare is going broke in eight years."
Officially, “on the clock," Democrats (including Mr. Obama) spoke TWICE as long as Republicans---how is that for reconciliation?!
The bottom line of the over six hours of dialogue was that there may be a little room for “coming together” but, per Mr. Obama, “Americans cannot wait any longer!" Deflecting the obvious “nuclear option” questions from Republicans, he said that Congressional leadership would decide how to progress!!
We must do all that we possibly can to STOP OBAMACARE RIGHT NOW! Barack Obama indicated that the “reconciliation” procedure was a very viable option. Please, help us to tell Members of Congress to STOP OBAMACARE.
