Thinking about these and other statements made by the man who wears the title of president. I keep wondering what country he believes he's president of.



In one of my very favorite stories, Edward Everett Hale's "The Man without a Country," a young Army lieutenant named Philip Nolan stands condemned for treason during the Revolutionary War, having come under the influence of Aaron Burr. When the judge asks him if he wishes to say anything before sentence is passed, young Nolan defiantly exclaims, "Damn the United States ! I wish I might never hear of the United States again!"



The stunned silence in the courtroom is palpable, pulsing. After a long pause, the judge soberly says to the angry lieutenant: "You have just pronounced your own sentence. You will never hear of the United States again.. I sentence you to spend the rest of your life at sea, on one or another of this country's naval vessels - under strict orders that no one will ever speak to you again about the country you have just cursed."



And so it was. Philip Nolan was taken away and spent the next 40 years at sea, never hearing anything but an occasional slip of the tongue about America. The last few pages of the story, recounting Nolan's dying hours in his small stateroom - now turned into a shrine to the country he fore swore - never fail to bring me to tears. And I find my own love for this dream, this miracle called America , refreshed and renewed. I know how blessed and unique we are.



But reading and hearing the audacious, shocking statements of the man who was recently elected our president - a young black man living the impossible dream of millions of young Americans, past and present, black and white - I want to ask him, "Just what country do you think you're president of?"



You surely can't be referring to the United States of America, can you? America is emphatically a Christian nation, and has been from its inception! Seventy percent of her citizens identify themselves as Christian. The Declaration of Independence and our Constitution were framed, written and ratified by Christians. It's because this was, and is, a nation built on and guided by Judeo-Christian biblical principles that you, sir, have had the inestimable privilege of being elected her president.



You studied law at Harvard, didn't you, sir? You taught constitutional law in Chicago? Did you not ever read the statement of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and an author of the landmark "Federalist Papers": " Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers - and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation - to select and prefer Christians for their rulers"?



In your studies, you surely must have read the decision of the Supreme Court in 1892: "Our lives and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of the Redeemer of mankind. It is impossible that it should be otherwise; and in this sense and to this extent our civilization and our institutions are emphatically Christian."



Did your professors have you skip over all the high-court decisions right up till the mid 1900's that echoed and reinforced these views and intentions? Did you pick up the history of American jurisprudence only in 1947, when for the first time a phrase coined by Thomas Jefferson about a "wall of separation between church and state" was used to deny some specific religious expression - contrary to Jefferson' s intent with that statement?



Or, wait a minute . were your ideas about America's Christianity formed during the 20 years you were a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ under your pastor, Jeremiah Wright? Is that where you got the idea that " America is no longer a Christian nation"? Is this where you, even as you came to call yourself a Christian, formed the belief that "America has been arrogant"?



Even if that's the understandable explanation of your damning of your country and accusing the whole nation (not just a few military officials trying their best to keep more Americans from being murdered by jihadists) of "not always living up to her ideals," how did you come up with the ridiculous, alarming notion that we might be "considered a Muslim nation"?



Is it because there are some 2 million or more Muslims living here, trying to be good Americans? Out of a current population of over 300 million,

70 percent of whom are Christians? Does that make us, by any rational definition, a "Muslim nation"?



Why are we not, then, a "Chinese nation"? A "Korean nation"? Even a "Vietnamese nation"? There are even more of these distinct groups in America than Muslims. And if the distinction you're trying to make is a religious one, why is America not "a Jewish nation"? There's actually a case to be made for the latter, because our Constitution - and the success of our Revolution and founding - owe a deep debt to our Jewish brothers.



Have you stopped to think what an actual Muslim America would be like? Have you ever really spent much time in Iran? Even in Egypt? You, having been instructed in Islam as a kid at a Muslim school in Indonesia and saying you still love the call to evening prayers, can surely picture our nation founded on the Quran, not the Judeo-Christian Bible, and living under Shariah law. Can't you? You do recall Muhammad's directives [Surah 9:5,73] to "break the cross" and "kill the infidel"?



It seems increasingly and painfully obvious that you are more influenced by your upbringing and questionable education than most suspected.. If you consider yourself the president of a people who are "no longer Christian," who have "failed to live up to our ideals," who "have been arrogant," and might even be "considered Muslim" - you are president of a country most Americans don't recognize.



Could it be you are a president without a country?

Simple solutions to not so complex problems!













The "Show Me" state has once again showed us how it should be done. They need more publication and exposure on this. Let's pass it around.



















In 2007, Missouri placed on the ballot a proposed constitutional amendment designating English as the Official language of Missouri . Nearly 90% voting in favor! English became the official language for ALL governmental proceeding in Missouri . It also means no individual has the right to demand government services in a language OTHER than English.



In 2008 a measure was passed that requires our Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officials to verify the immigration status of any person arrested, and inform federal authorities if the person is found to be here illegally. It allows Missouri law enforcement offices to receive training to enforce federal immigration laws. The bill makes it clear that illegal immigrants will NOT have access to taxpayers benefits such as food stamps and health care through Missouri HealthNET.



In 2009 a measure was passed that ensures Missouri 's public institutions of higher education do NOT award financial aid to individuals who are here illegally. The law also requires all post-secondary institutions of higher education to annually certify to the Missouri Dept. of Higher Education that they have NOT knowingly awarded financial aid to students who are unlawfully present in the United States .



So while Arizona has made national news for its new law, it is important to remember Missouri has been proactive in addressing this growing problem.



Missouri has sent a clear message that illegal immigrants are NOT welcome in our state and they are certainly NOT welcome to receive public benefits at the cost of Missouri taxpayers!

I saw Blackwell pitch at old Crosley Field and still remember many of the players from that era. Kluzsewski, Stallcup, Grady Hatton, Gus Bell, and Herm Weimeier (who went to my HS Western Hills). Pitched at Crosley Field once after my Am. Legion days were over and one of my ex-teammates on the other team hit one off the left center field wall. Something you don't forget. Ah, the good old days.


Doug is a retried sales engineer and a good friend and co-worker from our Denison days. Doug pitched for Western Hills hs and one of the best American Legion teams in the country. His hs and Legion teams sent many players to the majors including Pete Rose to Cioncinnati.

Eddie Miller was my favorite player of those days as a Reds Shortstop, even though St. Louis had the perrenial all-star shortstop, Marty Marion.  Eddie had a gaff as he retired saying that the hardest play he haqd to make was playing between John Temple at second and Grady Hatton at third.  A no-no to Reds fans.

And thanks for your additions to my blog, Fred. Very interesting post "The Good War" times with returning service men playing softball in Mound Park, Portsmouth, Ohio.




Wayne threw hard and true. The rule is the hand can extend no more than six inches from the hip as the ball is delivered, therefore many pitchers would slap their thighs as they delivered to avoid being called for sidearm pitching.



In mentioning sidearm, baseball fans of that day were very familiar with Ewell Blackwell of the Cincinnati Reds. He was a tall, lanky pitcher and major league batters would claim it appeared that the ball was coming at them from third base.

Well ... Small world ... I never would guessed ... that is really interesting ... I worked in the Williams office a while and saw Ray Kornhoff frequently... As only 10 or 11 years old I was forever in trouble getting home too late at night ... having been at Mound Park watching Wayne W. ... work his arm. He would have a spot on his trouser leg after a game from where he would hit his leg with his hand as he delivered the ball ... was great to watch the games under the lights ... those were good times ... thanks for the info.....Fred

Ever since he was chosen as a reserve for the 2004 All-Star Game, Jamaal Magloire(notes) has been a bit of a running joke in NBA circles. Even though the Detroit Pistons won that year's title, Magloire was the embodiment of a weak Eastern Conference — "Heck, if that Canadian Jamaal Magloire can make an All-Star team, the East must be pretty weak" is how the story went. But just because he's possibly the most underwhelming All-Star of the past two decades, there is no reason to say that Jamaal Magloire isn't still good.



No, not at basketball. He's still pretty underwhelming at that. But at life he seems like he's got it figured out. From the Toronto Star's Doug Smith:



When he heard of the murder last Monday of single mother Lucita Charles - who left behind a 7-year-old son with cerebral palsy - not only did Jamaal Magloire think he could help out, he did help out.



The 10-year NBA veteran paid for the funeral for Charles (the city's 18th murder victim of this year) and plans to establish a trust fund for her orphaned son. [...]



"That's the most important thing: what's going to happen to (Charles' son)," he said. "We're going to try to set up this fund for him so that maybe in the future, when he needs special treatment or a special doctor, he can get it."





Awesome. And the best part is that Magloire wanted absolutely no credit for what he did. As Smith says, "He didn't do it for the publicity — he was upset that news of his actions first leaked out — but because he cares a bit."



Sorry, Jamaal Magloire, but when you do something this good and this cool, people are going to notice. Probably worth it though.



(Also, I have to mention that the Star's headline is pretty weird. Check it out and see if you don't mix up some verbs and get confused about what Magloire was trying to help with. It's like a Magic Eye for headlines.)
