THE INCREDIBLE JEEP!
Interscholastic athletic teams at South Webster High School in South Webster, Ohio are known as the “JEEPS”. Many people often ask . . . “What is a JEEP?” Read on friends and neighbors.
Most people associate the teams’ mascot with the four-wheel motor vehicle that became popular during military operations in World War II. A prime example of mistaken identity was when one sportswriter referring to one of the players who had an exceptional scoring evening stated, “He really put the pedal to the metal.” No, the JEEP of South Webster fame is not the four-wheeler JEEP. The JEEPS of South Webster are proud possessors of a completely unique mascot. Read on friends and neighbors.
Before 1940, South Webster High School athletic teams had no official name, although local sportswriters sometimes referred to them as the “midgets.”
However, in 1940 the rules of basketball, by accident, helped to produce the mighty JEEP. By the rule in 1940, coaches were not permitted on the playing floor to instruct players. Coaching had to be done prior to the start of the game or at halftime. During rest periods between the first and third quarters of play the team manager at South Webster would roll a small box onto the court to supply players with refreshments and first-aid materials. However, the coach at South Webster was accused (and rightly so perhaps) of sending in plays and instructive notes in this little four-wheeled box. Local fans were positive that when that little box was sent onto the floor, players were getting more than refreshments. Everyone knew that the box contained answers to the problems being presented by the opposing team.
Also in 1940, a favorite comic strip contained a character who knew everything. In 1936, the character of “Eugene the Jeep, “ a small, bright-eyed creature from Africa who was all knowing, was introduced into the “Popeye” comic strip. Popeye gave the Jeep to his girlfriend, Olive Oyl, as a birthday gift. The Jeep, whose diet consisted of orchids, helped Popeye solve many difficult situations in his comic strip career.
Since the JEEP was all knowing, some local South Webster people associated the coach’s box, containing messages to his players, with the comic strip character.
According to, what is now legend, the late Mayor of South Webster, Mr. Gilbert Havener, is credited as the first person to label the box as the “JEEP BOX.” The sports editor of The Portsmouth Times (now Daily Times), Lynn Wittenberg, picked up the term and used it in describing South Webster’s 1940 Scioto County Tournament team.
The mascot was never officially adopted, but has been, since 1940 generally accepted.
The evolution of the JEEP continued in 1949, with JEEPS appearing for the first time on varsity basketball uniforms and, in 1950, the JEEP emblem appeared on warm-up pants of varsity players.
Although never officially adopted, and often mistakenly compared to the common four-wheeled vehicle, the JEEP remains the rallying symbol for Bloom Local High School at South Webster . . . . teams, students, graduates and her many fans. It is a unique mascot and that uniqueness is one of the major reasons for it’s continuing popularity.

‘Secret’ scrimmages have been all the rage in college basketball the last few years, with Kentucky’s first opponent of the season, Michigan State, losing to Gonzaga last week behind closed doors. Today, John Calipari told reporters he’d like for his team to participate in private scrimmages against other Power 5 opponents to prepare for the season, but it all comes down to one thing: money.
“It’s solely money. I’d like to scrimmage vs. having two exhibitions but I also have the feel of what the athletic department needs and if they ever said, hey we’re good because have an extra home game if you want to do it, we would do it.”
Calipari pointed out that, unlike most programs, Kentucky can rake in a lot of money for an exhibition game thanks to its uniquely devoted fan base.
“It becomes money that is budgeted. These many home games, this many exhibitions, it’s budgeted and in that setting, let’s just say, I’ll throw a number, it’s a million dollars. Well, it’s coming from something. So, is it coming from swimming? Is it coming from the volleyball team? Where it coming from? Baseball? It’s coming from something.
“But I get it and if we weren’t hurting anything to go play an exhibition game — most teams don’t make what we do on a home game. Maybe they make very little on a home game. That’s not the case with us.”
Say UK did participate in a private scrimmage next year; who would you want it to be against?
On Thursday afternoon, the Greater Louisville UK Alumni Club, in corporate partnership with Central Bank, hosted the 2019 Wildcat Tip-off Luncheon, featuring head basketball coaches John Calipari and Matthew Mitchell on Millionaires Row at Churchill Downs.
When Calipari took the podium, the Kentucky men’s coach discussed the state of his program, recruiting success, and Ellen Calipari’s popular Instagram page, among other topics.
When asked about what he likes about the 2019-20 roster and how they’ve progressed since arriving on campus this summer, Calipari went through the entire team top-to-bottom.
He started with his star ball-handlers lining the backcourt.
“You have Ashton [Hagans] and Immanuel [Quickley],” Calipari said. “Anyone that went to the Blue-White [Game] or watched it, how much better is Immanuel Quickley? He’s not even the same player. You have Tyrese Maxey, who is going to be really good.”
In terms of his wings, he started with freshman guard Johnny Juzang, who Calipari said is getting “beat up” in practice a bit. As a result, he’s missing shots.
“You have Johnny Juzang, who is… I called him into the office, they’re beating him up a little bit in practice, grabbing him, he’s not used to it,” he said. “So now, he’s not making shots, which is his game. I said, “You’ve never had to go this hard. You’ve never gotten beat up like this. Now you’ve got no legs to make a shot when you do make a shot.” I told him he’s got to get comfortable in this setting. Right now, he’s uncomfortable. I need him to be comfortable being uncomfortable. He’s going to do it.”
As for freshman forward Kahlil Whitney, after mixed reviews during the summer, Calipari said he had his “best practice” as a Wildcat this week.
“Kahlil [Whitney] had his best practice two days ago,” he said. “I always get worried, I have my feet on the panic button for individual players. But he came through.”
And forwards Keion Brooks and Nate Sestina? Two major bright spots.
“And then you have Keion Brooks, who is way better than we thought. He gives us flexibility,” he said. “And how many of you like Nate Sestina? You know?”
He then told a funny story of talking to the Bucknell coaching staff about getting Sestina on campus and how happy he is that it was able to come to fruition.
“I’m not into taking grad transfers unless it’s from a Power Five where they feed them and get what they need,” he said. “But a mid-major, I think it wrecks programs, gets coaches fired. I try to stay away from it. This kid was from Bucknell. The assistant coach called me and said, “Look, we’ve got a kid you need to consider. He’s a gradate student.” I said, “Wait a minute. Graduate student? Is there something wrong with him?” Why would you be sending him to me? Why wouldn’t you keep him? I said I wasn’t for it.” He said, “Here at Bucknell we don’t have graduate programs.” I said, “Invent one? Create one? Are you crazy?” So I took him, and we are so happy with him.
What does he like about Sestina?
“He’s a leader, he talks, he plays hard, he shows effort,” Calipari said. “He also shoots it like Derek Willis used to shoot it. Remember Derek? When we spread things out? That’s what this kid can do.”
As for EJ Montgomery, Nick Richards, and Dontaie Allen, he kept it short and sweet.
“EJ [Montgomery] and Nick [Richards], they’re getting much better. Really improved,” Calipari said. “Dontaie [Allen] hasn’t started practicing yet, so he’s doing stuff individually. But his knee and his shoulder set him back.”
At the conclusion of the summer, the general consensus around the program was that the 2019-20 roster could be one of Calipari’s best on the defensive end of the floor.
When asked about his thoughts on that with the season finally here, the Kentucky head coach said the potential is still there, but they are coming up short in one aspect. While they have elite perimeter defenders and shot blockers, he said they will need to build a bit more toughness on the glass.
“If we’re not a great defensive team, we’ll be [at worst] just okay,” he said. “We would still have a good year, it just wouldn’t be anything special. Being a great defensive team means you start on the ball, your guards can really guard. We all know Ashton and Tyrese, they can both do that. It starts there. The second piece of that is whether we have shot blockers behind them. So as they make these guys play, shot blockers can go get balls, which lowers their shooting percentage. We have that.
“Now, do you have the toughness to come down with rebounds?” Calipari continued. “Or do you do everything right, stop the ball, and force bad shots, but the guy muscles his way through for the [offensive] rebound and an easy basket? I worry about that part for us right now. We’re doing a lot of toughness things, but if any of you ever played or coached, you juggle balls. The more you do the “banging banging,” we have nine scholarship players. [If you’re not careful], you’ll be at six. But I don’t think we have a choice, so our practices have been pretty physical.
On the other end of the floor, Calipari also said passing the ball is a point of emphasis, something they will need to improve if they want to live up to their impressive potential.
“Offensively, just getting them to pass the ball,” he said. “There are times one person will pass the ball and I will stop practice, say, “Hey everyone, give him a hand for passing. He never passes!” [On the flip side], Tyler Herro never passed… I told him, “You’re the worst passer I’ve ever coached.” Now, if he has six assists or something, he’ll send me a text, “Hey, I had six assists today.” And I’ll respond, “Yeah, well you’re the worst passer to ever have six assists. How about that?” So we’re just trying to get them to pass the ball a little bit more, they’re trying to figure out who they are. It just takes time.”

All summer, we’ve been guessing what Kentucky’s starting lineup would be. Ahead of Sunday’s exhibition vs. Georgetown College, UK included a projected starting lineup in the game notes and it includes…Ashton Hagans, Kahlil Whitney, Tyrese Maxey, Nick Richards and EJ Montgomery.
Now before you start overreacting to a projected starting lineup for an exhibition game, UK also told the reporters at today’s media opportunity that they only put five guys on there because they had to, so there’s no guarantee those five will be the ones to tip off vs. the Tigers.

My Mistake ...
I mistakenly heard a few words on the radio while driving that sounded like an intelligent case for leftist socialism. As I learned, it was just another intelligent conservative Christian touting our great democratic Republic.
Old Sammy can still learn a lot often by listening a little further sometimes.
I have NEVER heard an intelligent discussion in favor of leftist socialism. I haven't read anything that describes such a thing.
Once I read that "Selfishness can ruin any system going". It always occurs in leftist socialism, and can occur in our system if we get sufficient numbers of selfi-centered leaders who are supposed to represent the people, but increase their own important status and riches at the people's expense. We have that in the USA right now and we definitely need term-limits for elected "officials".

University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach John Calipari addressed the crowd assembled in Rupp Arena and those watching from home on Friday night during Big Blue Madness.
Below is a transcript of Calipari’s speech as provided by UK:
Hello Big Blue Nation!
What a night!
What a celebration of the last 10 years of Kentucky basketball and the start of the next 10 … our second tour!
Ten years ago, thousands gathered in Rupp Arena, while millions watched around the state, country and world. We celebrated the rebirth of this storied program … the greatest tradition in college basketball. We stood together under the lights, under the jerseys, under the banners that hang in this cathedral of college basketball. With one powerful voice, we proclaimed that we would achieve … as a family … seemingly unreachable heights for this program … for these players. And we did. We worked hard, together. We built trust, together. We became a family, together. We didn’t surrender to the pressure. We distinguished ourselves as we climbed atop the mountain of college basketball.
Ten years ago, we said we would be a players-first program defined by integrity and purpose. We built this program to serve our players … to help them reach their dreams. In the last 10 years … we’ve won a national championship … won more games than any other team … been to more Final Fours than any other program … won more NCAA Tournament games … appeared in more Elite Eights and more Sweet 16s than any other school … won five SEC regular-season championships … and six SEC Tournament titles. During that same time … 38 players have been drafted from this program, including 29 first-round picks. And we’ve graduated 20 players with four graduating in just three years. Seven others who left us early to chase their NBA dreams have returned to work on their degrees. In the last 10 years … 22 players in the NBA received max contracts, seven of the 22 are Kentucky Wildcats! Seven! That level of success is crazy. It’s a level of success only possible at one place… Kentucky… the greatest tradition in the history of college basketball.
My role … our staff’s role … is to serve the players. Inspire them to reach higher than they thought possible. To build exceptional men. My job is to make these guys uncomfortable. Their job is to be comfortable being uncomfortable. The discomfort and struggle will bend you, but it won’t break you … we won’t let it. It will make you a better player, a better teammate and a better person. That’s how we raise the bar. The Big Blue Nation is more than a fan base. You uplift this team, the commonwealth’s team. You’re the heartbeat of this team, Kentucky’s team.
You, the greatest fans in the world, make this the greatest stage in college basketball. The Carnegie Hall of college athletics. This is about integrity … pure intentions. We won’t embellish. Some may say their program will take care of you the rest of your life. Our mission is to prepare our young people to take care of themselves for the rest of their lives. We are upfront with them from the very start that this is going to be the hardest thing they will ever do. And we will be there every step of the way. What’s better than having an opportunity to chase your dreams on this stage? With a group of teammates who have the same aspirations and dreams. Willing to sacrifice for each other and a staff that chases your dreams with you. You will never feel alone.
When you come here, you play against the best. You have to want that challenge. You have to want to wake up every day with the desire to be stronger, faster, better. That’s why we say this is not for everybody. The greatest players make their mark here. Our best players … our best teams … are part of our great history because they learned to play together. They played as a family. They found strength in one another. Those teams were built in the trenches. Built through sweat. Built over time. Built so that under the lights we’re unbreakable. We do this together. For some that means being here for one year, for others it means more because everyone is on their own path. Some may finish at other schools but they are always welcome home. That is family. That is La Familia.
We’ve helped mold young men into NBA professionals. Professionals who have collectively earned more than $2 billion in contracts. We’ve helped young men walk across the stage with their diploma in hand. That’s a commitment we make to each player who wears Kentucky blue, a lifetime scholarship. Whether in four years or at the end of your professional career, this is your home. Forever.
I have a few questions for all of us. What will we do next? What will we do in the next 10 years? How do we grow? How do we keep getting better? What will the Big Blue Nation achieve, together, as we start this second tour?
Our potential is limitless. The competition will be fierce, the road will be difficult. We need an entire nation … a Big Blue Nation … behind us as we start a new decade and continue to showcase why Kentucky will forever be the greatest tradition in college basketball.
