Ralph Eldon Harrison, 73, of Portsmouth, went home forever on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at his home in Rosemount.
He was born Oct. 16, 1937, in Gallipolis, Ohio, to Hollis and Virginia Harrison. Ralph was a 1959 graduate of the Ohio University School of Music; he began his teaching career in the Portsmouth City Schools that fall. He introduced the “big band” sound to his McKinley students and formed the Vestets Stage Band. They played for many organizations and were Ambassadors to our Sister City, Orizaba, Mexico.
Ralph taught beginning band and general music for the Portsmouth City Schools for 26 years, retiring in 1994. He was Minister of Music at Christ’s Community Church for many years, and served as Worship Leader and Choir Director at Bigelow Church from 1986 to 2003. Ralph was always active in musicals in the community and in his church. He directed many youth musicals and was active in the Southern Ohio Light Opera productions of “The Mikado” and “The Music Man,” portraying lead roles in each.
He was a man of great faith and he lived that faith each day.
His survivors include Sue (Legg) Harrison, his wife of 49 years; daughters Jennifer Sue and Laurie Ann; his brother Larry (Anna Marie) of North Ridgeville, Ohio, and sister Sandy Misicka (Mark) of Columbus, Ohio; brother-in-law Richard (Gleeta) Legg of Crosby, Texas; six nieces and nephews, and his beloved pups, Sunny and Sugar.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at Bigelow Church, 415 Washington St. in Portsmouth, with Pastor Steve Schueren officiating. Visitation hours are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with services beginning at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bigelow Church Memorial Fund, 415 Washington St., Portsmouth, Ohio 45662; Central Ohio Parkinson’s Society, P.O. Box 16126, Columbus, Ohio 43216-6126; or Sierra’s Haven, 80 Easter Drive, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662.
We are compiling a memory book about Ralph. If you have a favorite memory, photo or story about him, please e-mail it to Sue at ralphandsue1961@frontier.com with “Ralph Memory Book” as the subject line. Even if you’d just like a copy of the finished book, please email Sue. We’ll work on it the rest of this winter.
Arrangements are under the direction of F.C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth.

For Christian American readers of this blog:
I wish to incite all Christians to rise up and take back the United States of America with all of God's manifold blessings. We want the free allowance of the Bible and prayers allowed again in schools, halls of justice, and all governing bodies. We don't seek a theocracy until Jesus returns to earth because all men are weak and power corrupts the very best of them.
We want to be a kinder and gentler people without slavery or condescension to any.
The world seems to be in a time of discontent among the populace. Christians should not fear. God is Love, shown best through Jesus Christ. God is still in control. All Glory to our Creator and to our God!
A favorite quote from my good friend, Jack Plymale, which I appreciate:
"Wars are planned by old men,in council rooms apart. They plan for greater armament, they map the battle chart, but: where sightless eyes stare out, beyond life's vanished joys, I've noticed, somehow, all the dead and mamed are hardly more than boys(Grantland Rice per our mutual friend, Sarah Rapp)."
Thanks Jack!
I must admit that I do not check authenticity of my posts. If anyone can tell me of a non-biased arbitrator, I will attempt to do so more regularly. I know of no such arbitrator for the internet.
