I wrote this so I won't forget.
Should've known God was up to something when my trip home from work was
interrupted with a reminder of something I needed from the grocery. It
was even more obvious when my buggy already had a quarter inserted in
the slot that releases it from the chained line of buggies. It's always
nice to have one waiting and ready to go. After I found all the things I
needed and entered the checkout line, that's when I saw her. The
elderly lady that could hardly walk, with a pile of groceries heaping
over her cart, the same cart she used as a walking device to balance
herself with. I couldn't help staring at her, even if it was longer
than what is socially acceptable, my heart began to melt as I figured
out that I knew the lady and her physical history, as well. She was a
walking miracle! I would've never imagined seeing her out doing her own
grocery shopping, much less, driving a car. She explained to me that
she was shopping for her church to feed
the elderly for Christmas, then she stated, with a giggle, "They're all
younger than me." Which is probably true. I was able to help her get
ahead in the line, then out to the parking lot to lift the large box of
food and bags into her car. She hugged me and we both drove away but, my
thoughts stayed at the store with her and my love for this lady grew
even more.
I can't help but wonder how a heart can become so
determined to help people in their community, even in her physical
state. It may take four of her steps to equal one of my steps, but she
definitively took larger steps of courage than I could began to imagine
taking. She not only went to pick up groceries for the food pantry for
her church, but she also choose the store that was least accommodating
for her condition, I imagine it could be because it's least expensive
and the money could go farther and help more people. Instead of making
excuses, she took the first steps, then God made sure that He meet her
just when she needed a little help. I know He placed me in that store,
with His perfect timing, then He rewarded me with a giant hug from this
dear lady. I'm not sure if there's anything that I could receive that
would encourage me any more this Christmas than this encounter did.
Merry Christmas!
