Makin Island
A true story about 19 marines killed on a Pacific island (defending against the Japanese) during World War II. Before retreating, the surviving Marines asked the islanders to please bury the dead Marines for us. Years later, a man was found who had been a teenager during the war, and he remembered where the 19 Marines were buried. The United States Marine Corps sent a C-130 and an Honor Guard and found all 19 had been buried with their helmets on, their rifles in their hands, in perfect condition. The islanders had really done a wonderful job. As the bodies were being loaded for the trip home, a voice from out of nowhere started singing "The Marine Hymn"; it gave everyone goosebumps. Turns out, the voice was from a man who spoke no English but remembered the song the Marines taught him when they landed. Very touching. Photos of the 19 Marines are at the end of the presentation which may be seen by clicking on the link below.
