If I refer to an acquaintance as my "Fearless Fosdick", I mean it as a sincere compliment, although Fearless Fosdick was a hapless character who absolutely grabbed the intelligents of the Dogpatch hillbilly "Lil Abner". Fearless was a parody of Chester Gould's creation "Dick Tracy". Tracy would seriously always "get his man" in clever ways, whereas Fosdick was indeed consistently inept, but entertaining, especially to Lil Abner. Capp was such a clever cartoonist to those of us of many years on earth.
A good friend of mine and compatriot at DOD's Columbus Defense Supply Center recently passed - Bob Yates, a black exceptional in my opinion . He was my Fearless Fosdick, mainly because we are of similar age and literary appreciation. He also knew of Fearless and had a happy smile response when I referred to him as my Fearless Fosdick. Few others knew of our understanding of the character. I found it so ironic that his sense of humor immediately required him to respond to a bowling alley page I put forth for a phone call to Fearless Fosdick. Bob had an exceptional sense of humor and I pray that Jesus will happily advocate for him at St. Peter's gate. Bob was just a little ornery as some think I am, erroneously of course.
The University of Kentucky has a wonderfully young and beautiful editor of our Kentucky Alumni magazine. Kelli Elam works for Stan Key, our national director and a Fearless Fosdick in the sense I try to explain above. I recently complimented her on the most recent magazine and suggested she look up "Fearless Fosdick". I loved the parody so much that I went to the trouble of a Google search myself.
I am hardly the "TIO" (The Innocent One) mimicking the innocence and healthy good looks of Lil Abner and the beauty of the blond "Daisy Mae", although my non-blond Jeanie Weddington Kegley wife has Daisy's beauty. But I was entertained by Fearless and would get wrapped up in books as Abner does the Fearless comic strips, so much so, that my dear mother would refer to me as the absent-minded professor when, at ten, might grab a comic and crawl like a serpent from a couch to the floor to a chair and all around the room mesmerized by my current "Fearless Fosdick".
Please Google "Fearless Fosdick" and enjoy if you aren't too young!
