Madison Square Garden Today for the Wildcats ... KSR AM 12/8/2018
Old Wildcat fans truly never die.
I am an 86 year old Wildcat fan (UK 61) and I can appreciate the feelings of these 18/19 season Kentucky Wildcats.
An old friend of mine lives in Austin, TX now with his son and family.
Dick Klitch was the best of us Highland School outdoor court basketballers in Portsmouth, Ohio. Portsmouth HS coach Bill Rohr took Dick and a few others to Miami of Ohio for basketball. Dick was also Ohio's singles tennis champion in 1951. Miami, with Dick, played in the garden, and we P'Towners were proud to read a New York sports writer declare that Miami's Dick Klitch "had the sweetest hook shot the NY writer had seen at the Garden" then.
Portsmouth was a great sports town then, although still a relatively small town in south central Ohio. We even relished Walter Winchell's remark once nationally, that Portsmouth, Ohio may be the only town in the USA to have a tombstone on every corner. Even that side mention made this kid want to go out and pat the McConnell-Vinton marker just a few feet from our front steps.
I have been blessed to have so many acquaintances with Portsmouth's outstanding sports stars as well as just solid people of lasting integrity - which is one of my favorite words of all time, along with my favorite two words, Christian Integrity.
Merry Christmas Wildcat fans!
