12 Days of Bowlmas: Penn State looks a lot like Mississippi State
By Nick Roush on ©December 21st, 2018 @ 11:00pm
Kentucky and Penn State have met on the gridiron just five times, and only once since 1978, yet the Nittany Lions look like a familiar foe.
“They’re a really good defense,” said UK offensive coordinator Eddie Gran. “In a couple categories, they’re top five in sacks, tackles for loss. They move around well and remind you of an SEC-type defense. They’re really physical and they do a hack of a job. We’ll have to play really well and make sure we’re physical. We’re going to have to finish and strain.”
To be exact, who is the SEC defense Eddie Gran is talking about? “Mississippi State,” Mark Stoops affirmed without hesitation.
There’s a good reason why the two look similar. The top dog in Starkville, Joe Moorhead, called the Penn State offense for two years before landing the job at Miss. State. Moorhead’s current defensive coordinator, Bob Shoop, served in the same position for James Franklin at Vanderbilt and at Penn State for two years.
“They’re a lot like Mississippi State in a lot of ways,” said Kash Daniel. “They’re really big and athletic. Their offensive line can move good, quarterback can move good. They’ve got really powerful backs. The tight ends can move and block well. It’s kind of like Mississippi State, with their own twist. There’s a couple things that are not exactly how Miss. State attacked us. There’s a couple things in there that are a little bit different, but the concepts are the same.”
Schematically, the two teams don’t look so different. What makes them mirror images is their personnel.
Penn State doesn’t have a Jeffrey Simmons or a Montez Sweat in their front four, but Yetur Gross-Matos isn’t far behind the future first round NFL draft picks. Gross-Matos has recorded eight sacks (7th in the Big Ten) and 20 tackles for loss (2nd in Big Ten). Penn State’s powerful front four is largely responsibly for their top 20 scoring defense. They rank fourth nationally in sacks and seventh in tackles for loss.
Offensively, it’s hard to look at Trace McSorley without seeing a lot of Nick Fitzgerald. Each quarterback can move the offense down the field using their arm and legs. Fitzgerald is five inches taller, but aside from that, they are eerily similar on paper.

Kentucky has prepared for quarterbacks like McSorley before. Even when they aren’t preparing for one, they see one everyday in practice.
“The fact that Terry puts pressure on you with his arms and his feet obviously helps us,” said defensive coordinator Matt House.
There is one outlier between Penn State and Mississippi State: rush defense. The Nittany Lions rank 70th nationally at stopping the run, surrendering 168.4 yards per game. The number is comparable to Florida’s rush defense, a unit that surrendered 303 yards to Kentucky. It’s music to Benny Snell’s ears.
“It’s all going to start off on our edge, how we approach the game. It’s going to be a big game,” Benny Snell said. “They got some NFL guys. That’s a fact. It’s definitely going to be a battle, but it’s very similar to Mississippi State on who’s their game-changers on defense, where their weakness are at, so it’s going to be exciting.”
Kentucky’s most dominant performance of the year was a rainy 28-7 victory over Mississippi State at Kroger Field. Benny’s most memorable moment from his time as a Wildcat, the UK running back scored four touchdowns and rushed for 165 yards in the statement win. To replicate that kind of performance, it all starts up front.
“What we did against Mississippi State is we out-physicaled them. That’s something that’s going to be a huge emphasis for us,” said C.J. Conrad. “We have about a month to get healthy. I think that was a big importance. People asked us if we lost our edge offensively. I think a lot of it just had to do with us being beat up. Throughout the year that happens. For us to have this break, get healthy and get back into the weight room, I think we can replicate that kind of performance.”
If Kentucky brings a Mississippi State-like performance to the Citrus Bowl, 2019 will be a very Happy New Year for the Big Blue Nation.
Today on KSR: Rick Pitino is going Greek
By Jack Pilgrim on ©December 21st, 2018 @ 9:00am
Good morning, Big Blue Nation. Happy Friday!
If you were following along on the site, it sure was one heck of a Thursday filled with just about all the news you could possibly imagine. If not, let’s get you updated:
Rick Pitino will coach in Greece
In the biggest news of the last 24 hours, former Louisville head coach Rick Pitino is in the process of finalizing a deal to become the head coach of Panathinkaikos B.C. in Greece, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
Pitino is expected to coach his first game with the team on December 27.
Find out why Greece is a perfect fit for Pitino below:
Six Wildcats earn Phil Steele All-America and/or All-SEC honors
Kentucky senior linebacker Josh Allen, senior safety Mike Edwards, sophomore center Drake Jackson, junior running back Benny Snell Jr., senior offensive guard Bunchy Stallings and senior safety Darius West all received All-America and/or All-Southeastern Conference honors from college football guru Phil Steele yesterday.
Allen, Snell and Stallings were named to All-America teams, with Allen earning first team honors and Snell and Stallings being named to the third-team. All three were picked first-team All-SEC. Steele also selected Edwards to the second team, with Jackson and West also being named third-team All-SEC.
Congratulations to all of our Wildcats on the honors.
John Calipari says he’s “not in a hurry to walk away” from Kentucky
Kentucky head coach John Calipari may have only expected this to be a ten-year job coming in, but it certainly sounds like he’s in it for the long haul.
During his weekly press conference yesterday afternoon, Coach Cal was asked about North Carolina head coach Roy Williams accepting a contract extension through 2028 and where he would be when that time came. Though he joked to start with, Calipari responded by saying he wasn’t “so much in a hurry” to leave Kentucky.
“The thing that’s great about this position is it took me until the age of 50 to get the job, so I’m not so much in a hurry to walk away from it,” he said. “But for me, I just want to keep doing what I’m doing for these kids.”
When asked about his team’s matchup with North Carolina on Saturday, Calipari said his team is going to have to come out with fight and energy if they want a chance to win.
“Well, they come at you a lot of different ways,” he said. “They’re going to score points. We’re going to score points too. The games we’ve played against these guys in most cases it’s been two teams going right at each other. That’s how you’re going to have to play. Some of the shots they take are tough shots, but they make them. You can’t have that phase you.
What does he like specifically about the Tar Heels?
“They play fast,” he said. “They get it up the court in a hurry. They look for quick post-ups. They through their point guard a lot. That player is a vital position for them. (Roy Williams) does a great job every year.”
While updating the media on his team’s matchup with North Carolina, Coach Cal came out in some epic corduroy shorts, which can be seen below:
Quade Green transfers to Washington
According to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, now-former Kentucky point guard Quade Green will transfer to Washington to play for head coach Mike Hopkins.
Out of high school, Green nearly committed to Syracuse where Hopkins was the lead recruiter for the Orange.
Green later confirmed the news in a tweet:
Jarren Williams changed his mind (again)
Matt’s mystery transfer was finally unveiled on Wednesday afternoon when news came out that Miami freshman quarterback Jarren Williams was set to transfer from the program. Not long after, word leaked out that Kentucky was the likely destination.
Now, 247 Sports is reporting that the former Kentucky target will stay at Miami after the Hurricane coaching staff convinced him to stay.
“Coach Mark Richt and Coach Jon Richt convinced Jarren to stay,” his father Anthony Williams told 247Sports. “They convinced him to stay by laying out a path he’ll have an opportunity to compete and play in the 2019 season.”
In the same interview, Anthony Williams said playing time was absolutely the issue at hand.
“They were talking to him yesterday and today about staying and competing through the spring. He felt as though he should had an opportunity to probably play more. He was frustrated by play time,” he said.
Color me shocked.
Sydney McLaughlin snubbed for Bowerman Award
In other “you’ve got to be kidding me” news, former Kentucky track superstar Sydney McLaughlin was snubbed last night for the most prestigious award in all of collegiate track: The Bowerman Award.
Georgia triple jumper Keturah Orji took home the award for Female Track Athlete of the Year over the Kentucky record-holder..
Here was McLaughlin on the stage during the announcement:
As one of three finalists, the former Wildcat represented the University of Kentucky well:
Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart put it best: “Kentucky fans expected Sydney to win, they came to watch how much she would win by.”
I want a recount.
Urban Meyer will teach a class on “Leadership and Character” at Ohio State
After retiring from coaching, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer will be blessing the Buckeye community with knowledge.
No, it won’t be focused on coaching or football analysis. Meyer will be co-teaching a course at OSU titled “Leadership and Character.”
According to the ESPN report, Meyer will teach alongside Lt. Col. Charles Buchanan, “a senior lecturer at the business school who also spent 15 years in the U.S. military, serving tours in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo.”
If there is one thing we know about Urban Meyer, it’s that he’s a high-character guy with impeccable leadership skills.
Following this news, Bobby Petrino announced he will be teaching a course at the University of Louisville on Motorcycle Safety and Etiquette.

REPORT: QB Jarren Williams will stay at Miami
By Jack Pilgrim on ©December 20th, 2018 @ 7:55pm
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Jarren Williams has changed his mind on a college decision.
After news broke yesterday afternoon that the Miami freshman quarterback was set to transfer, it has now been reported by 247 Sports that the former Kentucky target will stay at Miami.
According to the report, the Hurricane coaching staff convinced Williams to stay this afternoon.
KSR’s Matt Jones hinted at a major incoming transfer for Kentucky, and later admitted Williams was the guy he was referencing. Other media outlets later reported Kentucky was the team to beat to land the stud quarterback when he officially hits the transfer market.
Now, the two-time Kentucky quarterback commitment is off the board once again.

Kentucky cornerback Michael Nesbitt is no longer with the team
By Jack Pilgrim on ©December 20th, 2018 @ 4:30pm
Kentucky freshman cornerback Michael Nesbitt has left the program, a source confirmed to KSR this afternoon.
247 Sports’ Derek Terry was the first to break the news, which was confirmed by a University of Kentucky spokeswoman.
After redshirting as a freshman, Nesbitt worked his way up the depth chart to the No. 2 cornerback spot this season, making three tackles in three games behind senior DB Lonnie Johnson. He also spent significant time on special teams, playing in ten total games for the Wildcats in 2018.
Considered a three-star prospect in the class of 2017, the Fort Lauderdale, FL product chose Kentucky over Auburn, LSU, Florida State, and South Carolina, among others. ESPN had Nesbitt listed as the No. 43 cornerback out of Florida, while 247 Sports had him ranked No. 112 overall in the state.
Kentucky will also be losing Johnson, Derrick Baity, Chris Westry, Mike Edwards, and Darius West out of the secondary due to graduation. On National Signing Day yesterday, the Wildcats signed Taj Dodson, Quandre Mosely, Brandin Echols, and Moses Douglass as early enrollees, along with Jalen Geiger to round out the defensive back signees.
12 Days of Bowlmas: A 10-win season is elusive, but UK football is “here to break records”
By Maggie Davis on ©December 19th, 2018 @ 6:15pm
I don’t have to be the one to tell you this Kentucky football team is special. Thanks to stars like Josh Allen and Benny Snell, fan favorites like Kash Daniel and CJ Conrad, reliable contributors like Bunchy Stallings and Mike Edwards and up-and-comers like AJ Rose and Lynn Bowden, the 2018-19 season has been one for the record books. And they’re not done yet.
This team has the chance to do what has only been done at Kentucky twice in school history: win ten games. It happened in 1950 and 1977, but the impressive double-digit win season has eluded the Wildcats for decades. And while it’s been years in the making for UK fans, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these seniors.
“Getting the tenth win is extremely important for us. As a senior class, we want to go out on a positive note,” Conrad said. “When we’re out there for an hour and a half, two hours [at practice], we’re taking it extremely seriously. We’re prepping to try and get a win.”
Thanks to a New Year’s Day bowl game, the Cats get 15 extra practices to prepare for the matchup against Penn State. And it’s in these extra practices, it seems, that the gravity of a potential 10-win season has clicked with the players. Coach John Schlarman, the team’s current offensive-line coach and a former Kentucky player himself, has made sure to emphasize the impact a bowl win could have on the legacy of his own alma mater.
“To hear Coach Schlarman talking about it, that’s when you really understand this team’s win is important for us, but it’s also important for the fans and for the people that played here that didn’t get the opportunity to win ten games,” O-lineman Bunchy Stallings said. “And to be able to be in this position to try and go and get that tenth win – it’s amazing.”
It’s not an easy matchup by any means – Penn State is a powerhouse of a program with a lot of name recognition, meaning the experts (and even the so-called experts in Vegas) could be picking against the Cats (as if that’s anything new to this Kentucky team). And yes, finishing with a 9-4 record would still be excellent, not to mention the first time a Kentucky team hit nine wins since 1984. But, of course, that’s not the goal.
“We’ve been to two straight bowl games and haven’t gotten a win…It doesn’t feel good when you work this hard throughout the whole season, get a big accomplishment like making a bowl game, then you go out there and you lose it,” Stallings said. “That’s not what we’re here for; that’s not what we want to do. We want to go down there and execute and play as a team and bring that confidence forward for next year’s season.”
A nine-win season is more than respectable and, I’d argue, better than a lot of us predicted. But a 10-win season, especially one that could include a bowl-game victory over a traditional “football school” like Penn State, not to mention a streak-ending win over Florida and a beatdown against Louisville? Well, that’d be something truly remarkable.
“10-3. Not a lot of teams from Kentucky can say that. Not a lot of other teams can say they’ve won a bowl game,” Josh Allen said. “We’re here to break records, and I stand by that.”
You heard the man.

Bunchy Stallings accepts invite to the East-West Shrine Game
By Mrs. Tyler Thompson on ©December 19th, 2018 @ 5:00pm
Finally! Congratulations to Bunchy Stallings, who has accepted an invitation to the 2019 East-West Shrine Game.
The All-American guard will showcase his talents alongside fellow Cats CJ Conrad, Derrick Baity, and Jordan Jones at the annual all-star game on January 19 in St. Petersburg, Florida. The game will be broadcast live on the NFL Network at 3:00 p.m. EST. A week later, Josh Allen, Mike Edwards, Lonnie Johnson, and Darius West will play in the Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, also broadcast live on the NFL Network.
I think this calls for some pancakes.
TRANSCRIPT: Vince Marrow on Kentucky’s 2019 Early Signees
By Mrs. Tyler Thompson on ©December 19th, 2018 @ 4:15pm
Opening Statement …
“Good Evening. I’m just going to piggyback off of Coach [Stoops]. This probably was the best linebacker class we’ve signed since we’ve been here. I know we signed six or seven linebackers, and they’re all interchangeable, but this is a very athletic group and they were very highly recruited. I was very excited about that. Defense, we needed to address in this class because we’re losing a lot of guys on defense and we should be pretty good on offense next year, so defense was a big emphasis this year.”
On how the current group takes this new group being the best linebacker class …
“Because it is! To be quite honest, losing Josh [Allen] and Jordan [Jones] and we may have a transfer here and there, but overall this is, like Coach Stoops said. We used to have to project guys. We’d take guys that were 6’2”, 210 pounds, and then hope they grow into 6’3”, 230. These guys are already the type of guys that ‘Bama or Ohio State would take, or Oregon and schools like that. It’s a great group.”
On what makes this group so great …
“Very versatile. They can do it all. You can take all six of these guys and they can be Sams (strongside LBs), Jacks (hybrid LB/DE position). Some can play Will (weakside). Some can play Mike (middle). Some can play Sam. These are the type of guys, like I said, that Nick Saban would take. You just take these guys and they become good special teams players and just interchangeable. Some guys may grow into a D-end. You just never know, but it’s good size and length coming in.”
On how recruiting in Louisville worked …
“I just think our perception. I think we were pretty good in most of the state. Pretty much 85 percent of the state. Louisville was a different monster. It was just a thing where I think Louisville just had a strong hold on a lot of the kids there, a lot of the inner-city kids. Just came in with a message to say hey, this state is pretty much 90 percent blue, Big Blue Nation. For some reason, it was like the kids there were 90 percent, but in that 10-15 percent was Louisville. We just said a different message and the success we were having on defense. Three of the top linebackers we took out of there were top guys in the country. I think they saw success of our linebacker group. A lot of people don’t know that we’ve been pretty good in the NFL for the last couple of years with linebacker play. It was just getting these guys here to come play in the best conference in the country and come play with the best school in the state. It wasn’t a hard sell.”

COACH STOOPS: Okay. Exciting day for us. Really good to put the wraps on such a good class. Greatly appreciate our staff and the hard work they’ve done for the past year, past two years in some cases recruiting some of these players.
I feel very good about this class. I feel they’re excellent football players, excellent people, very good in the classroom. Feel good about going in state and getting some of the top prospects in state to stay home. Definitely some difference makers that were very important to us.
So across the board very excited about this class, top to bottom. And there still could be one or so out there in this class. And of course we’ll have a couple of spots left to continue to work for the February signing period. So, I like where we’re at.
Q. The in state guys, how did that come together getting five guys? And how important specifically to get into Louisville was it?
COACH STOOPS: I think it was very important. We’ve been working these guys for some time. They’re very — there’s very good players. You don’t know where the players are going to be in state, as I’ve mentioned every year. I think there’s always good quality in this state. Sometimes there’s not always the quantity.
COACH STOOPS: I think it was very important. We’ve been working these guys for some time. They’re very — there’s very good players. You don’t know where the players are going to be in state, as I’ve mentioned every year. I think there’s always good quality in this state. Sometimes there’s not always the quantity.
This year, there were certainly a good amount of very good football players. And it was a group effort. Really appreciate the work of our staff and certainly Coach Marrow, our recruiting coordinator, went in there and had a strong impact and built some strong relationships with these kids, along with our position coaches and other guys. And Coach Schlarman started it years ago in that area. So it was a group effort.
But Coach Marrow will talk to you in a minute, let the big dog come up here in a minute. He certainly did a very good job and definitely had a big hand in landing some of these guys.
Is Jarren Williams Matt’s mystery transfer?
By Mrs. Tyler Thompson on ©December 19th, 2018 @ 3:14pm
Is Jarren Williams Matt’s mystery transfer? It sure sounds like it.
The four-star quarterback committed to Kentucky TWICE last year before having a change of heart and signing with Miami. Now, according to 247 Sports’ Steve Wiltfong, Williams is planning on transferring from The U.
Williams, the No. 5 pro-style quarterback in the 2018 class, played in one game for Miami this year, completing a pass for 17 yards vs. Savannah State. He was still able to redshirt and will be eligible for the 2020 season.
If you go back and read Vince Marrow’s comments from today’s signing day press conference, maybe Williams is one of the recruits that regrets not being a part of Kentucky’s special season?
“I will tell you, some of the dudes we lost in the 2018 class and even the 2017 class, you’ll see them talking to some of our other players like, ‘Man, I knew we should have went there.’ They saw it, but they didn’t believe it.”
Marrow also mentioned how the program’s reputation in Georgia has changed since he went after a certain quarterback from the state a few years ago — cough, Williams, cough. (UPDATED with Marrow’s comments)
“Georgia is the number one state that really produces college football players right now and I think even pros. When you have success, you’re not looked at as a joke going in there. I’m telling you when I was recruiting a quarterback years ago, and I went in there and started taking over his recruitment, Kentucky was looked at as, ‘Why you want to go there if you’re from the South? Why do you want to go there? You’re going to skip over all of these schools to go to Kentucky?’ But, when you starting beating those schools. When you start beating South Carolina, Florida, Missouri and all of those schools, Mississippi State, well, oh, this is a school I really want to go to. That’s what happened with us in Georgia now. This kid [Travis Tisdale], reminds me of Boom Williams so much. He has some traits like him. I really think this kid is going to be a homerun. I’m very excited to see him play.”
And who could forget Marrow’s comments that more good news was coming?
“I think we just tell the BBN to stay tuned. I think there’s going to be some very interesting things coming and I’m very excited about it. Just be patient. This thing, Coach Stoops — we’ve got to keep going forward and keep adding pieces to this program. And I’m very excited…but I’m very excited. Very, very soon.”
Hmm…
Kentucky will have at least nine early enrollees
By Mrs. Tyler Thompson on ©December 19th, 2018 @ 12:24pm
Most of Kentucky’s 2019 class has signed, and Mark Stoops said he expects to see some of them in just a few weeks. Stoops told reporters that right now, the program is expecting nine early enrollees:
- Marquez Bembry – 3-star Outside Linebacker
- Jared Casey – 4-star Outside Linebacker
- Eli Cox – 3-star Offensive Lineman
- Taj Dodson – 3-star Defensive Back
- Moses Douglass – 4-star Defensive Back
- Brandin Echols – 3-star Defensive Back
- Isaiah Gibson – 3-star Defensive Lineman
- DeMarcus Harris – 3-star Wide Receiver
- Tra Wilkins – 3-star Linebacker
That number could go up if JuCo players JaVonte Richardson (wide receiver) and Elijah James (defensive tackle) send in their paperwork this afternoon.
Stoops said he prefers players to enroll early as opposed to coming to campus in the fall, which he likened to “drinking through a fire hose.”
“I’m in total favor of it. I think it’s very good for the young men. I think spring is a much easier semester for the student athletes in football because the fall is so extremely busy. Their time demands are through the roof and it’s very strenuous mentally and physically. When you come in in the spring, you have an opportunity to get your feet on the ground and help you academically. Physically, you can get going and lift weights and spring is so much slower because you only have 15 practices and it’s very fundamental in the spring. It certainly helps.”

Keeping Cavon Butler made Vince Marrow “very happy”
By Mrs. Tyler Thompson on ©December 19th, 2018 @ 11:13am
Kentucky signed a lot of great players this morning, but the most impressive get may have been Cavon Butler, a defensive tackle out of Toledo, Ohio. Butler may have only been rated a three-star, but had offers from major programs like Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State. In an interview on KSR this morning, Vince Marrow said keeping Butler was a huge coup.
“[Ohio] being me and Mark’s home state and me, I went to the University of Toledo, played there, and there was a guy I played with at Toldeo, Craig Kuligowski, who is a Defensive Line Coach at Alabama, he had Cavon at the camp and Cavon was one of the better D-linemen and Nick Saban offered him right out of camp. I got word out from somebody up there that had happened.
“I think Cavon would have been very highly ranked. He didn’t go to any Rivals camps. He just went to that Alabama camp and he dominated some of their top offensive linemen were in camp that day. This kid is a very explosive, strong, physical kid. That’s why Ohio State offered him, that’s why Michigan and Michigan State [did too]. He was a real good get.”
Marrow didn’t mention Butler by name, but at the end of the interview, hinted that his signing was the highlight of the morning.
“Dude, I am very happy. I can’t say the one guy’s name because I ain’t gonna put him out there. But when I saw that signature come through, me and Coach Stoops gave a couple high fives because I knew there was a lot of people pushing for him at the last minute, one of those schools up north. I’m always excited when that happens.”
Watch him work then dance like Vince.
