I must repeat that neither Jeanie nor I see friends often when out, even before the COVID-19 pandemic. So few friends outside our nuclear family except for the people I send emails out to are still living. Dr. Dan Ross said something which I consider 'profound' in a recent Portsmouth Breakfast meeting in Columbus, that if someone uses the internet and gets messages they don't want, their keyboard has a delete button - I'm only half-kidding, because the ex- Director of the OHSAA is always so very wise. But I'm not kidding at all when I ask you to please email me back with or without your message for me to quit sending my missiles to you. There will be no problem on my end of the line. Jeanie and I were so spiritually- buoyed-up by the wonderful responses upon my original message about her breaking her left hip and falling on the non-icy spot we shared on the after church Genoa service February 7. Riverside Hospital accepted her in Emergency, and informed us that she would require surgery next day for hip fracture. Messages of encouragement poured in from family and internet friends. We heard testimonies that the hip surgeries were very successful over the last few years. Now, that is our experience. I am an emotional person who could not bear to see the girl I love deeply, hurt so much and cry, and I could almost feel her pain myself. Jeanie is 90 and did not want to have another osteoarthritis caused surgery because she has had probably 10 such at different joints throughout our 69 years of marriage. I am nevertheless surprised by her improvement already after four weeks of post-operative therapy for partial hip replacement. This operation could not have been avoided. She received excellent treatment at Riverside and at Friendship Village in Columbus. This Christian Conservative husband has prayed during, before, and even more now after, and thankfully to our Creator that I witness the goodness in the results. She will be getting more therapy. I have searched for Graydon Webb, our Ports group's wonderful carrying on who put things more succinctly somewhat by attesting to the Creator's guide to succesful scientific surgeries in encouragement for Jeanie. Jeanie and I regret that we see nearly nobody we know when we go out to a restaurant during the coronavirus; however, I tell her or take her so many good wishes from our email correspondence. I never had a best seller nor an agent but so many of you have been in my email receivers on her condition. I sent many notices of the partial hip replacement Sunday evening, 2/7/21, and she has been lifted up by, maybe 60 % well-wishers and mostly that many sincere prayers and several with testimonies from friends who have lived so much better since receiving hip transplants. She has been up and, although a slight touch of her weight on her left foot to yesterday morning, She took about 8 or 9 with partial weight on her left footlater in the pm. Social planners are. making arrangements for a close-by nursing home to help her for a while after she leaves the hospital. I guess it would be difficult for me to lift her repeatedly and get her in and out of the car. Jeanie nor I could ever thank everybody for all of the prayers and well-wishers, but it is truly heartening for this young couple of 69 years marriage after a couple of years of courting. I guess that qualifies for old-fashioned as well. She has been looking still, like the 90 year old beauty she is. Thanks, family and friends! My tennis Pro Life-long friend, Dick Klitch, passed peacefully this past Sunday morning 128/2021

Dick caught me in age August 15, 2020, at 87-years old for three months until I became 88. We Were bona-fide Mound Park Urchins in Portsmouith, Ohio. An urchin then could be defined as "a mischievous young child, especially one who is poorly or raggedly dressed" especially in my situation as one of ten kids. Those were days the parents could safely let their kids go to the nearby park early without any thought of serious criminal trouble throughout the day. Dick's dad normally worked nights, and so he spent a lot of time with the boys in the park in teaching them baseball, but,more than that, about life in living honestly. And, in winning with fundamentals. Herman Klitch was an outstanding teacher! I accepted a job 54 years ago in Columbus where DIck was the Dean of Tennis Teaching Pros. We renewed the friendship, which was solid, and spent a lot of our spare times together. Now today is a time of acceptable diversity, but Dick and I shared a completely heterosexual friendship in which our conversations were never, or hardly ever, regarding sexual things. I believe we shared mutual respect, if you won't believe me to be an egotist. I have written 13 books now without accumulating wealth, just merely a break even status.h My books have to do with interviews of acquaitnances who impressed me that they acted sensibly in their lives and with demonstrated integrity. Dick Klitch is in three of those books. He had a serious stroke a few years ago and after short rehabilitation in Columbus, He and his wonderful wife, Joan (Smith) Klitch, accepted son, Tim's invitation to come and share their house for a while in Austin Texas. Tim had retired his CEO position with the Comerica Bank there and his family was living in a sizable house that Lyndon and Ladybird Johnson once shared. My wife, Jeanie and I hope someday to share more time with our good friend Dick Klitch in Heaven. Nobody knows when that may be for Joan, Jeanie, or me. We take those passings sadly as they come. Nonetheless, Old Sammy is doubly saddened because I spent so little time in telephone conversations with Dick and was certainly hoping to spend more time here with my friend, Dick Klitch, suspecting the seriousness yet in denial. 1 Jeanette, New BOston HS (1948) and Sam Kegley. Portysmouth HS (1950) 2 Were married in Sciotoville Christian Church on Janury, 19, 1952 by 3 minister, Kurt Hess. They have lived the past 54 years in Westerville, 4 Ohio. Their sons are Jay (Terri) Upper Arlington and Jeff (Suzy) 5 Westerville. Granddaughters are: Tobey,Ida scout, and Morgan and 6 grandsons, Will and Daniel Allen. Jeanie received her PHT (Putting 7 Hubby Thru) degree from the UK Dames Club as Sam recieived his 8 B.S.of Metallurgical Engineering degree in 1961 from the University 9 of Kentucky. They feel the many blessings of God from their love of 10 one another, and from their love of family, friends, church, athletics, 11 and all of their acquaintances. 12 Sam Kegley

Two good stories- (and both true)   STORY NUMBER ONE    Many Years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago.  Capone wasn't famous for anything heroic.  He was notorious for enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder.     Capone had a lawyer nicknamed "Easy Eddie."  He was Capone's lawyer for a good reason.  Eddie was very good!  In fact, Eddie's skill at legal maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time.     To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well.. Not only was the money big, but Eddie got special dividends, as well.  For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day.  The estate was so large that it filled an entire Chicago City block.   Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration to the atrocity that went on around him.   Eddie did have one soft spot, however.  He had a son that he loved dearly.  Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes, cars, and a good education.  Nothing was withheld.  Price was no object.   And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to teach him right from wrong.  Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was.   Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things he couldn't give his son; he couldn't pass on a good name or a good example.   One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision.  Easy Eddie wanted to rectify wrongs he had done.   He decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al"Scarface" Capone, clean up his tarnished name, and offer his son some resemblance of integrity.  To do this, he would have to testify against The Mob, and he knew that the cost would be great.  So, he testified.   Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago Street.  But in his eyes, he had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he could ever pay..  Police removed from his pockets a rosary, a crucifix, a religious medallion, and a poem clipped from a magazine.     The poem read:   "The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour.  Now is the only time you own.  Live, love, toil with a will.  Place no faith in time.  For the clock may soon be still."    STORY NUMBER TWO  World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant Commander Butch O'Hare.  He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific.  One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission.  After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank.  He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship.    His flight leader told him to return to the carrier.  Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet.    As he was returning to the mother ship, he saw something that turned his blood cold; a squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its way toward the American-fleet.    The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but defenseless.  He couldn't reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet.  Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger.  There was only one thing to do.  He must somehow divert them from the fleet.    Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes.  Wing-mounted 50 caliber's blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another.  Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent.  Undaunted, he continued the assault.  He dove at the planes, trying to clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible, rendering them unfit to fly.  Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction.    Deeply relieved, Butch O'Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier.     Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding his return..  The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale.  It showed the extent of Butch's daring attempt to protect his fleet.  He had, in fact, destroyed five enemy aircraft.  This took place on February 20, 1942, and for that action Butch became the Navy's first Ace of W.W.II, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Medal of Honor.    A Year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29.  His hometown would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and today, O'Hare airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man.  So, the next time you find yourself at O'Hare International, give some thought to visiting Butch's memorial displaying his statue and his Medal of Honor.  It's located between Terminals 1 and 2.  SO WHAT DO THESE TWO STORIES HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER?      Butch O'Hare was "Easy Eddie's" son.   (Pretty cool, eh!)                                  <image001.jpg> Virus-free. www.avg.com     --   <image001.jpg>
