For Christian American readers of this blog:

I wish to incite all Christians to rise up and take back the United States of America with all of God's manifold blessings. We want the free allowance of the Bible and prayers allowed again in schools, halls of justice, and all governing bodies. We don't seek a theocracy until Jesus returns to earth because all men are weak and power corrupts the very best of them.
We want to be a kinder and gentler people without slavery or condescension to any.

The world seems to be in a time of discontent among the populace. Christians should not fear. God is Love, shown best through Jesus Christ. God is still in control. All Glory to our Creator and to our God!

A favorite quote from my good friend, Jack Plymale, which I appreciate:

"Wars are planned by old men,in council rooms apart. They plan for greater armament, they map the battle chart, but: where sightless eyes stare out, beyond life's vanished joys, I've noticed, somehow, all the dead and mamed are hardly more than boys(Grantland Rice per our mutual friend, Sarah Rapp)."

Thanks Jack!

I must admit that I do not check authenticity of my posts. If anyone can tell me of a non-biased arbitrator, I will attempt to do so more regularly. I know of no such arbitrator for the internet.

Sam, my minds eye doesn't see the face of Doug real well, but it does see a real good left hand hook shot, but the Doug Evermen I remember was/is older than I am. Which would make him 12 to 15 years older than your brother. Same guy? Jack P.

Yes, I believe it is the same Doug Everman, Jack. He and Jim worked together at the Portsmouth Times, before they started the Scioto Voice. I think he played basketball with Del Rice and others at PHS in 1939 when they won a State Championship for the Trojans in bounceyball, as you call it. He left the Voice and started a weekly paper in Vanceburg, KY if I am not mistaken. You realize, of course, that I am sometimes mistaken. Maybe Jim will update us on the facts of the story.

Sam

Sam,

Doug was born in 1925, so he was 14-years older than I. After I quit the P-Times in 1967 to start the Keg Carry Out, Doug, was inspired to leave the Times also, and he leased The Greenup News in about1970, and began publishing it. He did real well, and then in 1972, after I left The Yellow Pages, as a salesman, I saw Doug at The Hamburger Inn in August, and that's when the plot to hatch a weekly newspaper in Wheelersburg was born. We started the newspaper in late December 1972. We published the first edition on February 8, 1973.
Doug was an outstanding basketball and baseball/softball player, and played with Rocky Nelon before Rocky transferred to West; Doug was a lefty. He was also the best advertising saleman The Times ever had. He ran The Greenup News until about 1978, when he left to work for The Ashland Daily Independent. I bought his interest in The Voice in 1977.

The World's Largest Army. America's Hunters?

The state of Wisconsin has gone an entire deer hunting season without someone getting killed. That's great. There were over 600,000 hunters. Allow me to restate that number. Over the last two months, the eighth largest army in the world - more men under arms than Iran; more than France and Germany combined - deployed to the woods of a single American state to help keep the deer menace at bay. But that pales in comparison to the 750,000 who are in the woods of Pennsylvania this week. Michigan 's 700,000 hunters have now returned home. Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia , and it is literally the case that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world. America will forever be safe from foreign invasion of troops with that kind of home-grown firepower.

Hunting - it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of national security!

KENTUCKY Declares War on the USA
ONLY IN KENTUCKY !!

President Barack Obama was in the Oval Office when his telephone rang.

"Hello, President Obama” a heavily accented southern voice said. "This is Bubba, down here at Turkey Trot Beer Joint, I am callin' to tell ya’ll that we are officially declaring war on ya!"

"Well Bubba," Barack replied, "This is indeed important news! How big is your army?"

"Right now," said Bubba, after a moments calculation "there is myself, my cousin Harold, my next-door-neighbor Randy, and the whole dart team from Hooters. That makes eight!"

Barack paused. "I must tell you Bubba that I have one million men in my army waiting to move on my command."

"Wow," said Bubba. "I'll have to call ya back!"

Sure enough, the next day, Bubba called again. “Mr. Obama, the war is still on! We have managed to acquire some infantry equipment!"

"And what equipment would that be Bubba?" Barack asked.

"Well sir, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and Harry’s farm tractor."

President Obama sighed. "I must tell you Bubba, that I have 16,000 tanks and 14,000 armored personnel carriers. Also I've increased my army to one and a half million since we last spoke."

"Lord above", said Bubba, "I'll be getting back to ya."

Sure enough, Bubba rang again the next day… “President Obama, the war is still on! We have managed to git ourselves airborne! We up an' modified Harold’s ultra-light with a couple of shotguns in the cockpit, and four boys from the Legion have joined us as well!"

Barack was silent for a minute then cleared his throat. "I must tell you Bubba that I have 10,000 bombers and 20,000 fighter planes. My military complex is surrounded by laser-guided, surface-to-air missile sites. And since we last spoke, I've increased my army to TWO MILLION!"

"Oh Lord," said Bubba, "l'll have to call you back."

Sure enough, Bubba called again the next day. “President Obama! I am sorry to have to tell you that we have had to call off this here war."

"I'm sorry to hear that" said Barack. "Why the sudden change of heart?"

Well, sir," said Bubba, "we've all sat ourselves down and had a long chat over a few beers, and come to realize that there's just no way we can feed two million prisoners."

Bad news for the Gore Global Warmer advocates...

Thanks Ramey Sonny Hoskins! By the way, Sonny, don't these cold winter days make us feel absolutely Gored? It must not be happening. We are only insensitive conservatives. Please explain it all. Lib friends.

God, not Gore, knows the true effects of it all. Gore, self-proclaimed inventor of the internet, is only a liberal phony first class.

Sam

All of you out there across the globe who have fought so hard to tackle the hideous enemy of our planet, namely carbon emissions, you know .....that bogus god you worship of "Climate Change" or "Global Warming" ......well, I feel it is necessary to inform you of some bad news. It really does pain me to have to bring you this disappointing information.

Are you sitting down?

Okay, here's the bombshell. The current volcanic eruption going on in Iceland, since its first spewing of volcanic ash has, in just FOUR DAYS, NEGATED EVERY SINGLE EFFORT you have made in the past five years to control CO2 emissions on our planet - all of you.

Of course you know about this evil carbon dioxide that we are trying to suppress - it's that vital chemical compound that every plant requires to live and grow and to synthesize into oxygen for us humans and all animal life.

I know, I know.... (group hug)...it's very disheartening to realize that all of the carbon emission savings you have accomplished while suffering the inconvenience and expense of: driving Prius hybrids, buying fabric grocery bags, sitting up till midnight to finish your kid's "The Green Revolution" science project, throwing out all of your non-green cleaning supplies, using only two squares of toilet paper, putting a brick in your toilet tank reservoir, selling your SUV and speedboat, vacationing at home instead of Bali, nearly getting hit every day on your bicycle, replacing all of your $1 light bulbs with $10 light bulbs ...well, all of those things you have done have all gone down the tubes in just four days.

The volcanic ash emitted into the Earth's atmosphere in just four days - yes - FOUR DAYS ONLY by that volcano in Iceland, has totally erased every single effort you have made to reduce the evil beast, carbon. And there are around 200 active volcanoes on the planet spewing out this crud any one time - EVERY DAY.

Oh, I don't really want to rain on your parade too much, but I should mention that when the volcano Mt Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, it spewed out more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the entire human race had emitted in its entire 40 MILLION YEARS on earth. Yes folks, Mt pinnate was active for over one year - think about it.

Of course I shouldn't spoil this touchy-feely tree-hugging moment and mention the effect of solar and cosmic activity and the well-recognized 800-year global heating and cooling cycle, which keep happening, despite our completely insignificant efforts to affect climate change.

I'm so sorry. And I do wish I had a silver lining to this volcanic ash cloud but the fact of the matter is that the bush fire season across the western USA and Australia this year alone will negate your efforts to reduce carbon in our world for the next two to three years. And it happens every year.

Just remember that your government just tried to impose a whopping carbon tax on you on the basis of the bogus "human-caused" climate change scenario.

Hey, isn't it interesting how they don't mention "Global Warming" any more, but just "Climate Change" - you know why? It's because the planet has COOLED by 0.7 degrees in the past century and these global warming bullshit artists got caught with their pants down.

And just keep in mind that now the same government is in control, you will have an Emissions Trading Scheme - that whopping new tax - imposed on you, that will achieve absolutely nothing except make you poorer. It won't stop any volcanoes from erupting, that's for sure!

Please pass this on so’ everyone can know the truth on the “Global Warming - Climate Change” CON by Governments to introduce a new TAX.

More on Gus Thompson, Paul Walker... Jack H Plymale

My few readers should not resent me using my messages from Jack H Plymale, Portsmouth's bard via his, and mine, admired teacher, Bert Leach.

Sam, Gus Thompson was another" most unforgetable characters I ever met. I imagine he and Red played together at Highland. Doc there also.
Before we played Ashland our last of the year( they had beaten one of the Louisville boys schools the week before, Male Or Manual) and Walker had said in a pre-game talk that, any young horse can break wind in the morning, it takes an old horse to break wind at night. Once on defense we were talking it up and Gus Yelled down to me and then made a motion like he was breaking wind. He was fun to do anything with. He and Bobby Parks were two great ends.Bobby died, ,about two years from that game. Good.good player and fun guy. They said he had blood cancer, but I always guessed cycle cell anemia. I think they had his funeral in the auditoriun at the high school. Iwas in the service at that time, Jack P.

Thanks Jack! I remember Red being on the Trojans. It seems that you, Jim Fout, and Doc Yeagle mentioned him at the OSU football game we attended together. Great story and you make me see that run! I also slightly remember Betty Justice. Watkins Buick is also familiar in P'Town. Red had excellent friends as you testify of. I am sure that my departed Mound Park friends, Gib Lakeman, Gus Thompson, and Clark Rapalee could tell some wonderful stories of him.

The Scioto Voice... Thanks brother Jim Kegley (PHS 57)

My brother, Jim kegley, and his partner, Doug Everman, started the Scioto Voice, a weekly newspaper in eastern Scioto County many years ago. I thank him for the Cycle Inn notes, Val Minch's response and Mimi Brodsky Chenfeld's parasprodokians.
I am liberally borrowing from Jim in this post.

Thanks brother!

Sam

High Notes 01-06-2011

My column last week about The Cycle Inn evoked some responses. One was from Val Minch, PHS class of 1956, now of Hickory, North Carolina. And, I made the correction that the National Guard of Portsmouth was the 216th Engineering Battalion, not the 116th as I reported. Kenny McCall actually met his wife, June, who is from England, while they were attending Portsmouth Interstate Business College in 1949. Their son, Colin, is married to Charles (Lee) and Mary Ann Lang’s daughter, Sara, who is an art teacher in Zanesville. Kenny and June’s daughter, Wendy, is Mrs. Christopher Johnson, of Columbus.

Regarding your last week’s column:
”Great stroll down memory lane, but you neglected to include my name in the "Eat five Cycle Burgers contest".

“I remember it well. Any young person who lived in Portsmouth at that time was aware of the Cycle Inn eating contest, as it was heavily advertised on WPAY radio.

“I was bound and determined to give this eating contest a try, so to prepare for it, I developed a strategic plan that would guarantee I would be hungry enough to consume all (5) of the Cycle Burgers, each of which, (if memory serves), contained about 1/2 pound of ground beef, along with the other garnishments.

“My plan was simple. To be sure I had an empty stomach and was hungry, I got up on a Saturday morning and skipped breakfast and lunch, (no food and nothing to drink, not even water). Then to further guarantee I would be totally beyond famished, I walked to the Cycle Inn via the most convoluted route I could dream up.

“I left 19th street sometime around 2-3 o’clock in the afternoon and hoofed it to the Cycle Inn via McKinley school, then up Cleveland avenue and up over the hill to the city water tower, from where I proceeded East along the ridge of the hill, descending at the point where the Cycle Inn was located. I figured that by skipping breakfast and lunch and exerting extra energy getting there, once I arrived at the Cycle Inn I would be hungry enough to consume dog pucky!

“Anyway, I ordered up and ate all (5) Cycle Burgers, (had a hell of a time getting the last one down), after which I waddled home via Shawnee and Micklethwaite Rds, where I spent the rest of the day lying on the glider on our front porch, moaning and groaning!

“It was certainly worth the pain and agony though, as the big prize was my name being read a number of times on WPAY as part of the Cycle Inn's advertising format!”

Val Minch, Hickory, NC

I doubt that Val’s name was the only Cycle Burger eater, whose name I omitted, but Val and I were close friends, and our fathers had been friends long before we came along, so I should have remembered.

A paraprosdokian is a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to reframe or reinterpret the first part. It is frequently used for humorous or dramatic effect.
Here are a couple of examples: How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?
To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.
A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it.
A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. My desk is a workstation.
I would call that “irony”.
